If you think this is bad, there’s more. I happen to own a property in Downtown Powellville and have been contacting the county for at least 20 years and NOTHING has been done. After speaking to numerous neighbors they too have been complaining about these properties, (and more) and they too kept hitting dead ends.
I recently spent a lot of time at my home there as my Father had terminal cancer and I spent more then a month sitting with him on the front deck being subjected to what you are seeing above, (all of them). I finally put my foot down again and contacted the county, this time with demands. So many of us in Powellville have completely remodeled our homes and quite frankly these older homes look incredible. Yet the dilapidated properties continue to depreciate our property values.
I contacted County Council Member Larry Dodd who immediately came to my property and was blown away at how many attempts we’ve all made to get something started. He went into high gear and I was finally contacted by someone in the county who also came out and couldn’t believe just how bad it is. Letters went out several months ago stating if they didn’t improve the properties the county would send out demolition orders and tear them down. For some odd reason some property owners claimed they intend to remodel these properties and the county, (so far) continues to give them extensions, yet NONE of them have filed for permits in the past nine months proving they intend to do so. The photos above were taken within the past 2 days.
The bigger joke is how many of these properties are not structurally sound and have been let go for far too long. Any decent contractor would immediately tell you to knock them down and start over again. Look, when you let a property like these go for as long as they have, these people have no interest.
It’s time the county put out demolition orders within 30 days and take them down. Waiting decades just to get this far is bad enough but if ALL of you actually saw just how much traffic that goes by Powellville Road heading to and from Snow Hill you’d be blown away and all of these properties are directly on this road.
I’ve presented this information all the way up to the County Executives Office and waited till this day, (after the election yesterday) to put a fire under the people still waiting for the general election to show us tax payers just what they plan to do about this situation. I’m confident we are not the only areas with this problem but this is the entire downtown area of Powellville, another town that has been forgotten.
To clarify, the images above are at the end of Mt. Hermon Road and Powellville road. This is what you are subjected to and guess what, WE ARE NOT A GHETTO. If anything, it’s our leaders who remain inside their offices and do not travel the county to see what is real. Nor does your local media who takes no pride in the community they serve.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I love these old structures, they give the town character. What about the owners property rights. It’s funny how some people don’t want government in there lives but then in a situation like this they want government to do something. Can’t have it both ways!
We’re talking decades. The property owners have no interest is even putting a coat of paint on their buildings and keep in mind that most of these buildings are commercial. Heck, all but one of them are commercial. So there is a code by your so called government and our government has been ignoring those codes for decades as well. None of these properties are livable for a human being. The owners have had plenty of time to repair them and they have refused to. It’s time to rebuild America, not turn it into a ghetto.

Salisbury is a dump check out house in front of Salvation Army Thift store has trees in windows , no paint, house sinking and still the house on corner of Jackson with all the vehicles and I mean about 8 and everything else dumped in side yard and I mean every kind of metal junked cars, trucks, trailers, carts, looks worse than a junked vehicles yard for parts. What kind of job security is that? At least he had health care with benefits when he was a city employee. What a dumb move leaving that job? Thanks for the comment. I personally believe Powellville is a diamond in the rough. The prices are just right for small businesses to purchase, remodel and sell at a much lower price for first time home buyers. It’s a perfect area, close to Salisbury, Ocean City, Snow Hill, property taxes are very low and it’s affordable. However, while it may be cool to look at these old buildings, they are literally falling down. The old general store can likely fall down right onto Powellville Road and that would be very dangerous. It’s time to move forward before something goes seriously wrong.

I have lived in Powellville my whole life and the sight of these buildings falling down is just heartbreaking. On July 9, 2022 the owner of the Powellville Store had a sale of the kitchen equipment and other things that were left behind. After the sale, they moved everything to the front porch such as chairs, a filing cabinet, a Pepsi Sign, and lots of papers. Due to weather, everything that was on the porch ended up on the road and possibly on other peoples propriety. To my knowledge he has yet to come back to pick up any of the trash and it is still laying there! It is making our little town look like trash, which it is not. My mom and grandparents owned the store so my mom went to the sale and she said it was heartbreaking to see. I agree, that something needs to be done by the County. I know that the powerlines are an issue, but work with the power company to get those moved and then demolish the buildings and hold a control burn by the Powellville Fire Department. Yes, it will be a sad sight to see, but it may open doors to a possibility of another store or gas station. It could be a replica of what the Powellville Store used to be, with of course the updates required. I truly love Powellville and the people in it and I feel like the buildings are an embarrassment. We are famous for our Oyster Fritters and people travel from Virginia to get one. Come on Wicomico County. Help a small community out because we are worth it.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Although, it’s not just the private properties it is affecting. If these buildings were to fall down on their own guess where they would land? Right on the main road that goes from Willards all the way to Snow Hill. This would cause a road closure, power outages, and what if there is an emergency? So your tax dollars would not be used to “Subsidize our antiques.” It would be used to make sure that these buildings are taken down safely.
Properties are privately owned, it is the owners responsibility and right to do what they want with their properties. People should worry about their own property not someone else’s. Should property come up for sale let’s see all the complainers then put in their offers to buy

When riding to OC, which is not very often, I really prefer to ride down Mt. Hermon Rd to Powellville. It really is very sad to see all the rundown houses and businesses that would have been so nice to be kept up with. Such a quaint little town, but now those in charge of the county need to get with the program and get done what needs to be done. It has been ignored far too long, which is truly a shame. Help the people who helped get you elected and do something about this community, quit turning a blind eye. You politicians were elected to get things accomplished, not for your own personal agenda items all the time, as you seem to think.
Thank you Councilman Larry Dodd for helping you out with those dilapidated properties in Annapolis! Councilman Dodd has always been very responsive when it came to helping us and our Home Owners Association. He has always been my go to person on the County Council when John Cannon and Bill McCain weren’t. They either ignored the emails or passed the buck to someone else in the county. I will tell you someone else who has been a big disappointment, John Psota has! John Psota hasn’t returned our emails or our phone calls!

One family, the Marshalls, is persistent in alluding the county taxpayers with lies and deception. They say they are going to fix up the properties but nothing is done. They promise new windows, a new roof and nothing. Taxpayers need to look at how often the county has paid for the grass cutting on these properties. Taxes have gone unpaid. Enough is enough. Taxpayers need to stand up against people like the Marshalls who have deceived the locals and county. Contact the Planning and Zoning department and demand action.

None live in Powellville
How many people who live in Powellville are complaining? They have the right to petition the government for assistance. All it takes to create a matter of record is a letter with their signatures written to the county executive and council, and read aloud at a public session of the council. After that, no one can say, “Nobody ever told us or asked for help.” The county government is reminded of its responsibilities and will, probably with many reminders, be more likely to act.
Many residents in Powellville have formally complained in writing. I’ve already mentioned how I contacted council members and the executives office. I don’t need to stand on pac 14 complaining. I also have this format to share such information. There’s also a multi chain letter between residents who complained and even property owners. This is how we know the county is sitting on their hands for the most part. This is also why I mentioned that no permits have been filed in the past 9 months for these properties.
You people are dumb as Hell to think that Julie Giordano and John Cannon are GOP conservatives and you voted for them! What the Hell were you thinking! Neither one of them care about those properties in Powellville! They are the biggest Jake Day loving RINO’s in Wicomico County! They only care about pleasing Jake Day, Mike Dunn and Bill Chambers. Check out the one across from the Salvation Army Thift Store trees that hide the front windows , a house that is about to fall down. The house at the end of Jackson Street on your left even has signs in all the abandoned vehicles “CAMERAS IN USE” multiple trucks, cars, utility trailers, travel trailers, the whole side on the left and front yard full too, who are they paying off that it has looked like this for years? The Bronx in NY looks better than the city of Salisbury. DO WE NEED TO SEND THE PICTURES AGAIN.?
