Update on Fatal Accident from this morning

On 07/12/2022 at approximately 0426 hours, Troopers from the Maryland State Police Salisbury responded to the area of westbound U.S. Route 50 East of Forrest Grove Road, Wicomico County, Maryland to investigate a motor vehicle collision. Upon Troopers arrival they found that the collision involved the below listed vehicles and people. EMS responded and determined that the right front passenger of Acura was deceased and the right rear passenger of the same vehicle had suffered life-threatening injuries.   A preliminary investigation revealed that the both vehicles were traveling westbound on U.S. Route 50 in lane 1. The vehicle operated by Hwang (Honda) struck the left rear of  the vehicle operated by Evens (ACURA) with the right front of the Honda. The impact caused the Honda to be redirected south into the center median. At the base of the embankment the Honda was spun and facing Eastbound in the Westbound lanes, thus coming to final rest. As a result of the collision, the Acura spun around, thus traveling into the center median where it struck a tree with the right front of the vehicle. As a result of the collision, the right front passenger was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced deceased. The right rear passenger was transported to TidalHealth Hospital and then to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, MD due to severe life changing injuries.  The driver and left rear passenger of the Acura were transported to TidalHealth where they were later discharged with minor injuries.

Due to the nature of the incident, the State’s Attorney for Wicomico County, Jamie Dykes, responded to the scene. After being briefed of the incident the decision was made that Hwang would be charged at a later time upon compiling data by the Medical Examiners Office, the MSP Crash Team and results of the DUI tests are provided.  Westbound U.S. Route 50 was shut down for approximately 4 hours with the assistance of the Maryland Department of Transportation – State Highway.  Pittsville and Parsonsburg Fire Departments provided support for the extrication of those involved in the collision.
