Leonard Arvi is running for the Wicomico County Board of Education in District 3. He is currently a professor at Salisbury University. Arvi seems to offer different ideas. The question is, how radical is Arvi, his ideas and his radical affiliations? We don’t really know who Arvi is, as he doesn’t seem to fit the role of the WCBOE to represent the parents of Wicomico County.
Here’s a short clip on Arvi answering a question on how to address the education gap. He believes that the school should incentivize students by paying them to read. This is difficult to comprehend, because Arvi makes it sound like students are working for money as a form of Capitalism. In theory, it sounds more like Socialism if society has to pay a student to do something that they should already be doing for the sake of their own personal responsibility: “Play your part in society for a ration, and it will equal output.”
Arvi then goes on to address School Safety, a very hot topic today in light of the recent school shooting tragedies. Arvi believes that Wicomico schools should not have armed School Resource Officers, and they could not stop an attacker even if we had them. Watch the short clip below.
PLEASE DO NOT VOTE ARVI !!!
He is not one of us.
Thank you for publishing this. Informative, especially if you click More, and both read and view the video clip.
His views, IMHO, on both points are unrealistic and on the topic of school safety he’s on a different planet.
Paying to read: It’s well established and basically beyond question that being able to read well and comprehend is critical to being able to learn, and then to function successfully in our society. Set aside for a moment those with disabilities in this area. Students in general are reading averse, and have been for quite some time. Motivation does ultimately come from within but using $$ as the lure is misguided. Predictably, we’ll discover that certain groups are reading more and others less, and we’ll then adjust the pay rate up for those lagging behind. Rinse. Repeat.
The paradox is that written materials have never been more readily available, due to computers, internet and like devices. But the distractions are even more plentiful, and many are not positive in nature. Look in today’s school library, er, media center, and you find older, traditional materials have been weeded out to be replaced by slim, large print books with lots of illustrations, i.e. much less actual content. And many of those books were written solely to get on the library shelf and push a point of view. So the idea of paying a student to pick up a hammer without ever checking to see if they built anything is frivolous. Perhaps it works well in his SU classroom?
School safety: It’s terrible and tragic that we need police in the schools, metal detectors, barricaded buildings. But that is where we are today due to past tragedies. Is replacing cops with more counselors the answer? Don’t think so. The cops are actually needed on occasion, and provide a deterrent effect always.
We have permitted students with known problems to stay in schools, even when the counselors have been alerted to their issues out of fear that we would be accused of disfavoring those with actual, known problems. In doing so we place the majority at risk. Better we should get the kid the help they need outside of the regular setting before carefully bringing them back, if that is deemed appropriate. While decrying Resource Officers in public schools the perfesser (sic) carefully fails to mention he works at a school with its own armed police force. Waiting for him to advocate disbanding his workplace protection but not holding my breath.
The solution to school safety rests in large part on refusing to allow anti-social behaviors to pass unchallenged and corrected. We know that students actually desire clear rules that are followed and we do them a disservice when we equivocate and dissemble.
Not voting for Arvi.
Arvi for Freedom! He’s a breath of fresh air compared to the usual. Why not begin training youth that constructive behaviors are rewarded, literally? He’ll get my vote. I might even reach out to do more to support him. Immigrants always remind us of our roots in our values of freedom, self responsibility, and the rewards of doing the work.
Wow….really?
He disqualified himself as a Professor at Salisbury U. Didn’t need to ready anything else.
Next!
11:19 Thanks for the high gas prices too you idiot !!
11:19……um, what??????
Clearly he is an educated man but I’d be more impressed if he came out of his ivory tower and spent a year teaching in Wicomico. You can bet he would never do that, and that’s the problem. Just another person with an opinion and no experience to back up his reasoning. Further, if he has ever been in an active shooter situation, he’d want that police officer really fast.
At least this guy actually has kids in the public school unlike Susan “Pick me because of my Husband’s last name” Beauchamp….Tonya Lewis had her chance and has done nothing for our schools..time for a good change for once.
To 11:19. What planet are you from?
Planet Claire.
He is not one of us, which is a good thing…we need an outsider and skilled businessman instead of local bored housewives like Beauchamp and Lewis who literally married into the good old boy network. Arvi for me!
Financial literacy through a pro-capitalist approach is needed and I like his idea. I’ll consider him at the very least.
At least this guy’s kids actually attend public school in the county….unlike Susan Beauchamp….
Arvi came to the US and became a successful businessman by pulling himself up by his own bootstraps by following the pro freedom, pro-capitalist approach…….what did Beauchamp do for her “business success” other than marry George?
He seems like he actually wants to apply some business concepts to student success for once…good stuff.
I think Mr. Arvi brings a good business sense and an outsider’s perspective, much like Donald J. Trump did……we don’t need more of the same from the good old boy network on the BOE….He’s got my vote as a Fruitland resident. =)
Len’s a good guy and a good neighbor. Regardless of party affiliation he’s gonna make a great BOE member with a fresh business-centered perspective. -D.J.
This guy’s brought in more money and construction jobs to the county in the last two months than any thing the Beauchamp’s have done in 30 years as “contractors”……forget the jealous haters, GO Len GO!!!!!!!!!!
all unmotivated people should be paid by the taxpayers. adults have been paid for decades. why not pay their children
Len Arvi has a pretty unique set of ideas for a position that usually boring and status quo….he’s also not a leftist as a business man whose brought in tons of money locally…
It’s pretty simple, or is it? This isn’t and shouldn’t be an issue, had we not allowed left field moon bats the power and control they have. Personally I won’t vote for Arvi, but not for any reason then we as a whole have LET and LET CONTINUE this ideology. He isn’t completely wrong, however the approach is concerning. At the end of the day we need to get back to the basics. With that being said, it’s merely impossible since we’ve allowed such indoctrination in recent years. Compensation is ultimately and end goal, but should not be a part of learning values.
Guru?
As Uvalde and today’s latest shooting in Illinois proves, having armed cops in close range will not stop an attack and often could make it worse….SROs at best are just another government funded agent hovering over our students and turning them into prisons for and more…
He looks to have muslim decendants. Is that what we want in the Wicomico county school board??
7:25 – what a grossly racist comment. Crawl back into your moldy white Christian nationalist cave. You’re disgusting. And you’re bad for America.
Thanks for publishing the conservative candidate list a few weeks ago.
From this, it’s easy to see why his name is not on the conservative candidate list!
Reminds me of MF Tlaib and Omar…the other terrorist!
Guy is a socialist—we don’t need people that want to convert our kids to communism next and hate on USA
commie
Has Arvi along with Plotts and Figiozzi checked with their employers to see if they can be released from work at least four times if not more each month to attend day time meetings and events? Several years ago a professor from UMES missed everything during the day because they would not release him from his duties. School board is not just one meeting a month. Usually about 39-35 hours a month.
He is what is known as a “rama lama ding dong”.
Another left wing liberal on the ballot is George Demko. For several years he wrote monthly letters to the editor of The Times against the values that we as conservatives hold dear. Does any one know how to research these letters so people will know who he really is. If we are not careful, we will wake up on December 13, with him as chairman of the school board. This is the plan of the Democrates.
This comment was clearly written by that old dingbat Anne from District 4…Anne…hang it up…no one likes you and even your own stepson has stated to friends that he is not voting for you…hahahaha
