Wicomico Council Salary Increases Approved

SALISBURY – Wicomico officials voted this week to increase salaries for county council members.

On Tuesday, the Wicomico County Council voted to amend the county code to increase council salaries by $5,000 for members, $6,000 for vice president and $7,000 for president.

Councilman Larry Dodd abstained from voting and Councilman Joe Holloway opposed the increase.

“I am running again for county council,” he said. “I know it’s for the next county council, but I am going to vote no and leave it at that.”

In December, members of the Wicomico County Compensation and Allowance Commission came before the county council with recommended pay increases for the county executive, county council and the Wicomico County sheriff.

Beginning in 2022, the commission recommended an annual salary of $124,000 for the county executive position (currently $85,000), $25,000 for the Wicomico County Council president (currently $18,000), $23,000 for the Wicomico County Council vice president (currently $17,000) and $21,000 for council members (currently $16,000). The commission also recommended increasing the sheriff’s salary from $95,000 to $121,000.

Since that time, the council has voted to increase the sheriff’s salary to $117,000. And on Tuesday, officials voted 5-1, with Holloway opposed and Dodd abstaining, to approve the recommended salary increases for the county council.

In a public hearing preceding the vote, Wicomico resident Robert Taylor, the former council attorney, said he supported the pay increases, but argued it should be more. He noted, however, that the county’s charter prevented the council from adopting an increase that was more than the commission recommended.

“Frankly, I think the council is entitled to a lot more …,” he said. “The point of the matter is a lot more is required of the council then I think this commission took into account and probably realized.”

  1. wait til you see the wage increases rec and park is getting. there are only 2 workers their who should get any more money. i walk my dog at winterplace park regularly and i see what these “workers” do . next to nothing. these guys should be paid a lot less than what they are getting. if the county council approves a raise for these clowns they are absolutely crazy. if you don’t believe me come out and watch what this bearded hippie does, NOTHING

    1. ALL THEY DO is Enrich themselves with constant Raises while the Pee-on workers get LOW PAY !!!

Crooked County , City Govts !!! Just like the rest in America & Federal GOVT !!!!!!!

  2. I have sent a email to my council representative telling him to vote NO! for any salary increases within Wicomico County government. What I do not like is they hide all the details on the county website so the average person will never see anything. What I saw they are proposing in this recession is completely irresponsible and If John Cannon votes for this he needs to hit the road. No one in a local government should warrant a 10k 15k or 20 k salary adjustment as they are proposing. John Psota should have never sent this to council! But what does he care? That is a ton of votes for this election and years to come. I hope the council uses there head and votes against this burden to the taxpayer.

  3. the guy cooking hot dogs at the civic center gets $60000 a year. rec , parks and tourism is a huge drain on this county. extremely overpaid and under worked. check out how many county “workers” are near or over 100.000 a year. shocking. have no idea where all this money is coming from (or could there be a nice tax increase for us to look forward to).

  4. i have no problem with the county executive, county council, and county police force getting pay hikes. however, there are employees without even a high school diploma making over $80000 a year. the county is extremely top heavy. i was told that the head of rec and parks maintenance has been fired from every job he has had and is scheduled to get a raise of over $10000 this year. are there ever backround checks on county employees?

    1. I doubt every word of your comment.
I have noted the appalling low salaries for every position they have open, which has inhibited me from applying and shaking my head with a laugh.
You want to know why they have crappy employees that stand around and do nothing all day?
      That’s why.

And shove your ignorant elitist attitude with the lack of diploma comment. People in the trade industry can and do make more than the a$$holes with a liberal arts degree in basket weaving.

  5. I will be voting against anyone on my ballot who voted for these increases, or who accepts the increase.

And I’ll be sharing with others. Not that complicated. Anyone remember the political career of a councilman named Molnar? That’s the political future for the hogs at the trough.

  6. you’re right 804 a lack of education is always a good idea, and you’re also right in thinking that if you give these uneducated , ungroomed idiots more money they will work harder. you’re obviously a very intelligent person. did you get hired to teach at harvard after you got your p h d.

  7. 804 is definitely a red neck hillbilly, unemployed moron who is expecting to get paid a lot to do nothing. he will definitely be a great worker for rec and parks once they increase the pay scale for idiots, i q of below 12 is preferred. criminal record also comes in handy.

  8. well since the welfare crowd gets about 50K or more a year in bennies for just sitting on their asses. Why shouldn’t some uneducated hicks get in on the action? at least they have to get up get dressed and report to a job, for their cash!
