‘Diet’ Soda is disappearing from Store Shelves

As you make your way through the soda aisle, you may notice a lot less of the word “diet” than you used to.

That’s because some diet sodas are disappearing — or at least, that packaging is gone. Instead you’ll find those beverages under their new branding: zero sugar.

“Zero sugar” has replaced “diet” for many no-calorie soft drinks. Canada Dry and Schweppes ginger ales, 7Up, A&W and Sunkist, made by Keurig Dr Pepper, now label their diet drinks “zero sugar.” (One exception is the namesake Dr Pepper brand, which will still come in “diet” packaging in addition to a different zero sugar version.)

The reason for the overhaul: The word “diet” has fallen out of fashion — especially for Millennials and Gen Z-ers.

“Younger people just don’t like the word ‘diet,” said Greg Lyons, chief marketing officer at PepsiCo Beverages North America, during the Beverage Digest Future Smarts conference in December. Pepsi rebranded “Pepsi Max” as “Pepsi Zero Sugar” in 2016 and has been investing in its zero-sugar offerings over the past few year.

“No Gen Z wants to be on a diet these days,” he said, adding that the company is “going to continue to innovate and support that business.”

But distaste for the word diet doesn’t signal an aversion to no-calorie beverages. The diet soda segment, which includes diet and zero-calorie branded drinks, has ballooned since it first hit the mainstream in the 1960s. In 2020, the US retail diet carbonated soft drink market hit $11.2 billion, according to Mintel, a market research company.

  1. It’s more like FAT people that drink the crap don’t like the word DIET. It never ceases to amaze when soda is on sale people have carts piled high with it. Who drinks that much soda at home? I can see having it out with a trashy meal or something on the go or a Cuba Libra cocktail but really as a staple in your home. I have a deep tested well and a water filtration system and nothing quenches your thirst like water. So what it doesn’t taste like anything? Why does toothpaste and mouthwash have to taste like anything? Why does antiperspirant have to smell like anything? You’re not perspiring. Why do candles smell like cookies and pine trees? Why are we so obsessed with tantalizing our senses with tastes and smells and all of them artificial?
Our Grandparents were not so self-consumed with pampered feel-good pleasures and maybe WE should not be as well.

  2. Research it there is a recall on Coke products too. It really does not matter they have been poisoning our foods and everyday products since the 80’s. Yes they wanted us dead, goal was to cut the population down to 800 million people by 2030, yep sounds like a science fiction movie but guess what it is definitely true. The proof is out there and anybody can find it if you research.

Now go line up and take that vaccine and all the booster shots they have planned for you and heaven forbid don’t forget to wear that mask that compromises your immune system. The long list of Variants that are planned is unreal, problem is they skipped a few to get to the Omicron one so now you know why they are unsure as to how many booster shots to give you. Before you give into this crap anymore look up Spanish Flu and see what happened to those people, history is just repeating itself only then they promised to never force a mask ever again. Lies what else is new our whole life has been nothing but one lie after another so by all means trust the government because they really want what is best for you.

  3. No sugar…oh kay, replaced with aspartame which is chemical sugar
Snowflakes are not as smart as they think. College debt, degrees with no jobs, want electric everything and get themselves outta a paper bag.

Big business is smart and those in charge are older.
