Since President Joe Biden took office in January, the national debt has increased by $1.2 trillion. Legislation enacted since the Democrats took complete control of Washington will add at least another $2 trillion to deficits — and this does not include the gimmick-ridden Build Back Better plan being negotiated in the Senate.
Despite winning all levers of federal power in the last election and using them to add trillions to the debt, Democrats have refused to take responsibility for their actions and increase the debt limit without Republican help.
Under the scheme the House passed Tuesday, Senate Republicans may choose to provide Democrats a way to shirk their responsibility — and a blank check to do more damage.
Republican leader Mitch McConnell earlier vowed he would not allow a replay of October, when Republicans provided 11 votes to temporarily increase the debt limit. Democrats were expected to use the budget process and reconciliation to raise the debt ceiling without GOP votes.
After Majority Leader Chuck Schumer wasted the last two months on failed efforts to pass Democratic wish-list items like national early and mail-in voting, McConnell has again agreed to save the Democratic leader from himself.
