That’s because they aren’t testing the vaccinated.
Even the way they choose to report the numbers is misleading. Wicomico County doesn’t “have” so many thousands of cases. Eight thousand two hundred-odd have tested positive at some time in the past 18 months. Many of them were never sick.
Currently there are 16 people in the hospital – that and the deaths (179) are the only numbers that really mean anything. The “250 recovering at home” include everything from “tested positive but have no symptoms” to “pretty darn sick and maybe heading to the hospital,” but they make no attempt to separate these or report in a meaningful way.
The deaths attributed to the virus over almost a year and a half amount to 0.17 percent of the population of the county. Less than 10% of the people who died in the county last year died of the virus.
