There are about 1 million more job openings than people looking for work

Employers in the U.S. face an interesting challenge ahead – how to fill nearly 10 million job openings with about a million fewer workers than there are positions available.

How successful they are will go a long way in determining whether the recent strong of outsized job gains can continue.

The Department of Labor reported Friday that there are some 8.7 million potential workers who have been looking for jobs and are counted among the unemployed. At the same time, job placement site Indeed estimates there are about 9.8 million job vacancies as of July 16, or just a few days after the government’s sample period for the monthly numbers.

Companies have been using a variety of techniques, including signing bonuses, higher salaries and flexible working arrangements, to entice people. That likely will have to continue as the Covid-19 pandemic changes the jobs market, perhaps permanently.

“This is one of the most complex labor markets in recent memory,” said Scott Hamilton, global managing director for the human resources and compensation consulting practice at Gallagher, a global insurance brokerage, risk management and consulting firm. “One of the biggest factors is employers are essentially having to buy back job applicants’ Covid lifestyle.”

  1. You can thank Sippy Cup and woke for this they are handing out $ like candy for everyone to stay home and collect $. Salisbury is almost a ghost town of stores closed and gone anyone that comes to Salisbury for the “City Festival” will never return again. Efforts need to be made to get businesses here and people back to work not foolish festivals of alcohol and not local music but things not related to the area the old Buddy’s Shell day parties were more attended and more fitting. This mayor and city council have their heads in the clouds we are not the Inner Harbor don’t know when that is going to sink in. The air photos last year prooved poor attendance, and those with the $ buckets said they were ignored for $ drop in. The parking lot closest was not filled and the buses from the Civic Ctr to the festival were left unused. Get your heads out of the sand people!

  2. I wish I still had my youth and strength, I’d love to have two or three of those paying jobs. The work ethic is a thing of the past. Sad indeed.

    1. So that means folks who had bad jobs are choosing not to return to them because of the free $$$$$.

      Wouldn’t that make them smart????

  3. That’s why the borders are wide open and why Mexico and South American countries push them through. 15 dollars and hour is a lot of money to them and they send a good portion of it back there and those countries depend on it. We should be taxing all wire transfer companies and monitoring all the cash that leaves the country as well as all the Rich people and Companies that off shore their holdings.

  4. CUT OFF ALL THE “FREE” MONEY then they will get 2 – 3 jobs or live on the street and starve. I had to have this many jobs for 10 years and neither one paid me $15 an hr.

As a Retired Senior Citizen I still have to pay taxes and work part time to survive, since I supposedly don’t qualify for this “FREE” money.

Why do I have to pay for these lazy bums get anything without trying to help yourselves first. These moochers have no self respect for themselves..

  5. Be MAD about those today Getting ALL that FREE baby $$$$$$$ with no end date , since they are allowed
to Both work & get the money , unlike the Unemployed who are Not allowed to Both work & get the $$$$ !!!!!

You can’t tell them to go to work , because they already DO !!!! Still Getting the $$$$$$$$$
