Democrats Sue Texas Gov. Greg Abbott After He Strips Legislature Of Funding For 2 Years

Democrats in the Texas legislature filed a lawsuit against Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on Friday, claiming the governor violated the state constitution when he vetoed all funding for the state legislature as retribution for Democrats killing a bill that would have instituted voting restrictions.

The lawsuit, which was filed directly to the Texas Supreme Court, claims that Abbott overstepped his authority by violating the separation of powers defined in the Texas Constitution.

Abbott recently struck legislative funding out of a two-year state budget bill that had been passed, which will leave legislators and about 2,000 staffers without a paycheck until 2023.

According to The Dallas Morning News, Abbott said the move was in response to Democrats walking out of the state capitol at the end of the legislative session on May 30.

The walkout left the legislature without a quorum, preventing the voting restrictions bill from passing.
