After another weekend of violence in Fells Point, following a late-night shooting Saturday that sent people running for cover, people are looking for elected leaders to step up and answer questions about what can be done.
Del. Brooke Lierman faced criticism on WBAL Radio’s Dan Joseph Show about her apparent lack of responsiveness to not only the violence in Fells Point, but also the group of businesses that have threatened to withhold taxes and fees to City government until essential services are restored. Lierman is also running for Maryland State Comptroller.
“It would sort of being like a getting promotion for doing not so great of a job, right,” a viewer of the WBAL Radio’s Dan Joseph Show said. “Just like anything, we all have to prove we are capable of doing one thing before we get promoted to the next.”
“It’s kind of ironic that Delegate Brooke Lierman is currently running for Comptroller while the neighborhood she lives in is refusing to pay taxes for being denied fundamental services,” Mary Anne in Highlandtown said.
During an interview with FOX45 News Monday, Lierman said she understands the businesses frustrations, but warned of potential problems later for them in terms of their taxes.
“Inevitably that will only cause more headaches with the comptroller’s office and with the IRS. In the end it will end up hurting them more,” she said. “We all expect and deserve safe and thriving neighborhoods to raise our families and have our businesses.”
Bowie Mayor Tim Adams is also running for Maryland Comptroller and said he looks forward to meeting with the group of business owners in Fells Point – which has grown to nearly 40 owners.
“The people of Fells Point and the people in every community throughout Baltimore deserve to feel secure. This is about public safety, it’s about the city’s economy and it’s about accountability,” Adams said. “I look forward to meeting with these business owners to listen their concerns because they need to be heard, understood, and taken seriously.”
