Millions Could Face Eviction With Federal Moratorium Ending And A Logjam In Aid

Mehran Mossaddad has spent much of the pandemic scared and lying awake at night. He’s a single dad with an 10-year-old daughter living outside Atlanta.

“I get panic attacks not knowing what’s in store for us,” he says. “I have to take care of her.”

Mossaddad drives Uber for a living, but when the pandemic hit, he stopped because he couldn’t leave his daughter home alone. As a result, he has fallen more than $15,000 behind on his rent, and his landlord has filed an eviction case against him.

So back in March, when a federal moratorium on evictions got extended, and he heard Congress had approved nearly $50 billion for people to catch up on rent and avoid eviction, Mossaddad thought help was on the way.

“I do believe in miracles,” he told NPR back then. “It is a relief.”

Now Mossaddad’s miracle is evaporating. He applied for the federal aid and was approved. But he and his legal-aid lawyer say the county where he lives caps the amount anyone can receive for back rent at just 60% of what’s owed, with a maximum of $5,000.

“Which is very generous, it really is, but it’s not going to solve our problem,” Mossaddad says. “So things are looking pretty ugly right now.”

  1. Cat believes in miracles, but doesn’t believe in working. Get your ass to work and pay your landlord. How do you expect to live there without paying your way. Your landlord won’t help you anymore when the bank snatches your digs from under your fat ass. Didn’t you hear there is a shortage of workers now that the China virus has been slowed due to President Trump putting the scientists on fast track, warp ass, whop ass speed. They are even paying more than you were making before Biden came along.

    1. Single father, stuck with kid at home because schools are closed and your answer is go get a job? I believe in the article it stated why he could not.

Pretty sad how f-in clueless you are as to others struggles just because you are not experiencing it.

Typical example of a low information mentality.

I do not judge people on an issue I have never experienced. You may want to try doing that in the future.

      1. You are judging right here on something you know nothing about. I remember working for years to pay for my children’s care and safety. So don’t judge on my f’n’ ( your language) knowledge because that is the “sad” issue here. Perhaps think before commenting, I know I did and stand by it.

        1. “paying for my childrens care” has nothing to do with this issue, nice try
          daycares – closed
          schools – closed
          businesses – closed
He can’t “pay for his childrens care” when there is no job and no “care” to be had.
Oh and I didn’t judge, I decoded your ridiculous comment. very easy to do with a-holes like you.

          1. You just gave yourself away as a left wing nut job. That’s how they respond If one doesn’t think their way.

          2. 922pm then you pay taxes for those who don’t want to work, I sure as hell don’t want to!

I need my money to live….evidently you plenty and all the answers.

Not working, living off others – not America.

      2. My experience is having to relocate to better myself. In doing so, I kept my home and rented it. I was looking at someday returning and use my home as a added investment. Well the tenant lost employment, I lost rent money while having to pay the mortgage. As this subject lived in my place without pay, I had to pay to keep my credit standing. The lazy tenant damaged my property while free loading and I could not evict the person. Try that experience for a long period of time. No, I didn’t think you would. You can only blab on something you admit not experiencing.

  2. America is the land of opportunities, not a supposed to be a permanent handout nation. Figure it out. Harsh, but very very true.

Another thing, humans ARE more important than ALL ALL ALL other living things. Instead of giving $19 bucks a month to feed animals, apply it to a human in need. Not all are of the bad element either. Find a church, ask your local govt folks….look on Al Gores interwebs.

When did we go so wrong?

  3. Sounds like another one that ate high on the hog and is not inconvenienced, since he probably used his rent money on things that he wanted instead of using this unemployment and government handouts to pay for his rent and utilities.

    BOO HOO
Get 1,2,3 jobs if you have to to support you and your family. You want the government to suport you then move to a communist government that does that

  4. They spent their handouts on bling-mobiles and 60″ tv’s…and crabs!

Sympathy is in the dictionary – between shit and syphilis… NOT getting any out of me!
