The city of Alexandria will pull all police officers from public school hallways — ending a program that began nearly three decades ago — following a narrow and contentious vote by the city council earlier this month.
The council voted 4 to 3 on May 3 to reallocate nearly $800,000 used for the School Resource Officer program, which sent five officers into Alexandria’s one public high school and three public middle schools to patrol the hallways and keep order. The money will go instead toward initiatives meant to boost students’ mental health, although city officials are still working out the fine details with Alexandria City Public Schools. They have until July to come up with a spending plan, which will be subject to approval by the council.
How many teachers will have to go to the emergency room for breaking up fights to tell them they made a mistake.
Let the fun………….errr, I mean Fights, begin!
First let me say I don’t agree with removing them. That said, can we talk about $800,000 a year to support 6 people? That’s an average of $133,333 per person. Not sure how this money was allocated, but I’m sure it wasn’t like that.
Salary AND benefits are included in the $800k. Benefits include health, dental, life ins, retirement and any matching 401k contributions. Could include admin costs too….whatever that could be. Most dont understand that but first to complain.
Well looks like safety means nothing at all to the City of Alexandria for the children going to the school. What happens when someone walks in with their weapons to shoot up the school???? Going to wait for the defunded police?????? BLOOD IS ON THEIR HANDS!!!
REMOVE them from RADAR beats & put MORE in the schools !!!!!
REMOVE them from the HIGHWAYS instead of the Hallways !!!!
