Is America Ready for a Black Superman?

Ever since Superman was created over 80 years ago, the writers and artists who bring us his adventures have faced the same recurring problem: How do you make this guy interesting? He can do basically anything, after all. How do you challenge him? In the early days, they kept readers coming back by ramping up Superman’s powers. At first he just bounced bullets off his chest and leapt tall buildings in a single bound, but over the years he became so unstoppably mighty that he could fly under his own power into the heart of the Sun without even mussing his hair. Then DC Comics came up with kryptonite, the only thing that could weaken him, which kept him on his toes for a while. Then in the ’80s, they tried de-powering him. Then they killed him. Then they brought him back to life. Then they gave him a mullet. Then they turned him into, I dunno, some sort of electrical being? I stopped paying much attention after that, but you get the idea. DC has cranked out multiple comic books with this character every single month for the better part of a century, and they’ve tried just about everything to keep the money rolling in.

Well… almost everything! Tatiana Siegel and Borys Kit, Hollywood Reporter:

While promoting his Amazon Prime film Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse in late April, Michael B. Jordan put a Kryptonite pin in any rumors that he might suit up as Warner Bros.’ next Superman. “I’m flattered that people have me in that conversation,” Jordan told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s definitely a compliment, but I’m just watching on this one…”

When Warners announced in February that celebrated author Ta-Nehisi Coates is writing the screenplay and Abrams is producing, it did not address the matter of helming. But insiders say Warners and DC are committed to hiring a Black director to tackle what will be the first cinematic incarnation of Superman featuring a Black actor, with one source adding that putting Abrams at the helm would be “tone-deaf…”

Sources tell THR that Coates is crafting a Kal-El in the vein of the original Superman comics and will have the protagonist hail from Krypton and come to Earth. While the story is currently being crafted and many details could change, one option under consideration is for the film to be a 20th century period piece.

  1. No- I’m not. I’m a grown man so I don’t ready funny books anymore, or watch movies about funny book superheroes. I don’t listen to the crap on the radio anymore, either. Western civilization is exhausted and dead.

  2. Really? Black Vulcan was part of the Justice League. He used electricity to fly and his catch-phrase was “Great Lightning”

no, i’m not kidding snowflakes – use Al Gore’s interweb to read all about it!

    Black Superman??? HAHAHAHAHAHA

  3. Why not? It’s all about making MONEY anyway. Doesn’t. Japan have it’s own “Count of MonteCristo”?? I don’t see it as an issue.

  4. Yes America is “ready” for a “black Superman” BUT that anyone would even be concerned about this just goes to show how dumb people are. Blacks are slaughtering each other in this country in record numbers. 1000’s will be dead this year in the black on black genocide going on If they were better shots 10’s of 1000’s of blacks would be dead. The schools in black communities aren’t fit for human beings. They are dangerous and poor performing Black neighborhoods are rat holes not fit for human beings. But let’s worry about a black superman That’s really smart.

  5. Why oh why does everything have to be made Black now?
We got Black Equalizer, a Black Bat woman, they are demanding the next Alex Trebeck be a Black man, they want the first person to walk on the moon in the upcoming launch be a Black Woman, every TV show has turned into a black platform for bitching about white people.
I once worked in Africa and the tv commercials had less blacks in them then ours do now! ! !
They continue to cry and whine about slavery but they never ever had it as bad as the American Indian!!! Now there is a group that really got screwed.

    1. Or a paraplegic or quadriplegic, an amputee, a dwarf, a blind or deaf Superman,
or one with an I.Q. of 60, 300 pounds overweight, or a transgender Superwhatever?

Tell you what. Start with the black one and see what the box office says.

      1. Altering the Superman character is folly and a bad idea. 13% of possible customers might be interested. 87% would have little or no interest. There already have been ethnic superheroes, although perhaps not Hispanic (actually a larger % of population); that might be a more promising route to try.

Black casting will be a lead balloon at box office.

  6. It will be a popular as supergirl. A total and complete flop!
Just like 99 percent of the new shows out there!

    1. The women on that show were hot. So i guess sex continues to be a revenue generator.

Hmmmm, Rickie…see what i typed there? Revenue generator. Why block the ta ta’s when it would be a marketing and revenue generating success? The FREE national publicity alone.

Get outta your tight black under armour tee shirt mindset and embrace a cash cow when its hitting you in the face. Its not like you will be around come Nov 2022 anyways!

  7. Amazon’s “without Remorse” tanked and the only thing that was correct about the movie adaptation was the title.

    …get woke, go broke

  8. Just look how well the changes they made in Ghostbusters, (Females and a big Black one) made out at the box office. Changing the way an original is, is a bad thing!
