Report: Blacks, Hispanics underrepresented in Va. colleges

A new report from an educational reform group has found that Black and Hispanic students are woefully underrepresented in Virginia’s public colleges.

According to the April 12 report from Education Reform Now, Blacks and Hispanics make up 34% of Virginia’s college-age population.

But only three of 15 four-year public colleges in Virginia enroll Black and Hispanic students at levels matching the population. And two of those, Norfolk State and Virginia State, are historically Black colleges. The third is Old Dominion University.

Black and Hispanic students are least represented at Virginia Tech, James Madison, Virginia Military Institute, the University of Virginia and Christopher Newport University.

Those schools had combined Black and Hispanic enrollment between 10 and 13 percent.

  1. Quota’s are back on the table again?

    Quota’s = discrimination

Careful what you ask/wish, especially when Pandora is smiling!

    SMH!

  2. If they want to go to the darn school they can apply like anyone else. Or I guess they would prefer to pay the different people to come join in the fun.

  3. They’re well represented in Virginia’s HBCUs, which isn’t a surprise, and in less selective VA colleges/universities as well. They are less populous in the more selective VA schools because those schools can and do seek and admit students with stronger HS academic records. This is not rocket science!

Students seeking to attend a higher rated, more selective college would be extremely well advised to heed the early and consistent advice of teachers and counselors and to actually study and achieve in HS.
