Teens help keep Salisbury clean this summer

Mikell Sinclair took his first stab on Wednesday at keeping Salisbury’s Downtown Plaza clean behind a contraption call The Billy Goat, a noisy vacuum that sucks up trash and debris.

“It’s my first job and I get a paycheck,” he said. “It’s a good experience.”

The 15-year-old James M. Bennett High School student is one of 10 teenagers hired to work in the city’s Public Works Department this summer in a program that also involves Junior Achievement and the Greater Salisbury Committee.

The Summer Youth Work Program got its start when Mike Dunn, president and CEO of the Greater Salisbury Committee, pitched the idea to Mayor Jake Day several months ago. The committee pledged to help raise part of the money, while Day included funding in the fiscal 2017 budget.

“The Greater Salisbury Committee is thrilled to lead the way,” Dunn said during an event Wednesday to introduce this summer’s workers.

The program — an initiative designed to teach jobs skills while also boosting the Public Works Department’s staffing during the busy summer months — is similar to one run by the Greater Salisbury Committee in the early 1980s

The Greater Salisbury Committee was able to raise money to get this summer’s program off the ground since it started June 16 and the $55,000 in city funding won’t be available until July 1, the start of the new fiscal year.

Day said the 10 teens represent 10 different city neighborhoods and all of the local high schools.

  1. Hey Rickie, step up to the plate.

    Trash is an ongoing issue.

A true summer LOCAL student hire initiative.

    Why not?

  2. No white kids applied or were chosen?
Teaching black kids how to be garbage men?
I hope they teach them more skills than just trash pickup.

    1. Mike Dunn is just as racist as Jake Day. Let’s not forget that Mr. Albero just posted a story on a law suit against Mare Day for racism. Birds of a Feather…

  3. Good start, but why not take the individuals setting in jail out to also help in the clean up. Pay them a minimum wage to go to the cost of bail or fine. Minor offenders only.

  4. Oh, totally agree regarding those sitting in jail to get out there and do some community service such as this. They are doing nothing anyway except sitting in jail, complaining about their accommodations, the food, etc. Give them something to complain about. Tire their behinds out. They need to be out there cleaning up the community.

Right there^^^! It’s all about Mike Dunn! He thinks he is a leader and he is trying to run the City of Salisbury and Wicomico County!

  7. Does anyone know if Mike Dunn and his old lady are still Swingers? You do know that Mikey allowed her to get store boughts just for their Swinging adventures. Check out her recent post about a lost dog. She took the opportunity to bend over in the pic so everyone could see her well endowed cleavage.
