Roughly 39,500 students are expected to return to the classroom as part of the hybrid-option for Prince George’s County Public Schools, says a spokeswoman for the school system.
Students that returned Thursday for Phase 1 are special education students, Pre-K through sixth grade and high school seniors.
Phase 2 will start on April 15 for seventh through eleventh grade students.
That includes 6th grader Christopher Ramirez and his 7th grade sister, Diana Ramirez.
“I’m feeling nervous, but she’s really excited to go back and so I’m excited for her,” she said. “The precautions that they’re taking make me feel comfortable about her going back, doing the hybrid and so I said ok.”
Those precautions, however, don’t go far enough for a number of teachers who rallied together at Eleanor Roosevelt High School.
“I’m concerned about students spreading it among themselves and then taking it home to their families,” said vaccinated teacher Laurie Hortie.
She joined with other teachers calling for the return to in-person learning only when it’s safe.
