Ocean City asks to opt out of to-go alcohol licensing bill

The Town of Ocean City hopes to be excluded from a state bill that would allow Worcester County liquor licensing officials to establish a temporary to-go permit during dedicated special events.

On Tuesday, the council agreed to ask Senate and House of Delegates representatives to take Ocean City out of legislation that would permit the Worcester County Board of License Commissioners to issue liquor licenses to local municipalities.

Once issued, it would allow the board to then issue permits to establishments with existing liquor licenses, giving them the opportunity to offer to-go alcohol sales during designated special events within those towns.

“There are a myriad of concerns the town had,” City Solicitor Heather Stansbury said this week. “Speaking with the Ocean City PD, there are public safety concerns, and speaking with Special Events and all the work that Tom [Perlozzo’s] office does, there are special event concerns. From a legal perspective, we have liability concerns. And frankly, I’m not sure we’ve captured all of our concerns given when we found out about this.”
