AI Can Now Unmask Anonymous Internet Users, New Study Finds

It looks like AI can now unmask any anonymous account on the internet. That’s according to a new study by Simon Lermen (MATS), Daniel Paleka (ETH Zurich), Joshua Swanson (ETH Zurich), Michael Aerni (ETH Zurich), Nicholas Carlini (Anthropic), and Florian Tramèr (ETH Zurich), published on arXiv.

In the paper, “Large-Scale Online Deanonymization with LLMs,” the researchers show that modern large language models (LLMs) can re-identify people behind pseudonymous online accounts at a scale and accuracy that far surpass previous techniques.

  1. Can AI identify scam callers? I get anywhere between three and eight bogus scam calls on my cell phone nearly everyday except Sundays. They even call on holidays. I feel the need to check each call because a have a very close relative not in good health, otherwise I would just ignore. I have told them to stop calling, even cussed a few. To me, after a few calls, this becomes telephone harassment. Most of the callers have a middle eastern accent. Do our elected officials have this problem too or is there some kind of filter that the general public doesn’t have access to?

    1. If you don’t recognize the phone number that’s calling you, just don’t answer. Surely you know the numbers that would be calling about your relative, no?

    2. I don’t know about you but I am never getting scam callers on my landline. I’m getting dozens a day on my cell phone. Shame on Congress for doing nothing about a “Do Not Call” legislation.

Yes, I still have a Voip landline. Just haven’t did away with it yet and I never use it.

      1. I had a land line, pretty much quit using it. Got rid of it in Dec because of scam calls. Verizon is losing about $36 a month from me now. 🤗

    1. It’s not AI figuring this out, it’s Big Brother. But the question is, does Big Brother know where these scam callers are. If so, do something about it !!
