Electricity prices spike for American households: Here’s what’s driving costs higher

Surge in demand from data centers and artificial intelligence straining aging grid infrastructure

Electricity prices have surged over the past year, nearly doubling the overall inflation rate due to rising demand and increased investment in aging grid infrastructure.

Prices rose 4.5% in May on an annual basis, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ consumer price index (CPI), a broad measure of the cost of everyday goods like gasoline, groceries and rent. The overall inflation rate for all goods and services in May was 2.4%.

The demand for electricity is reaching an all-time record high, according to Phil Flynn, senior energy analyst at The Price Futures Group and a FOX Business contributor.

That was the case even before the first major heat wave of the season brought some of the hottest temperatures seen in a century to cities across the Northeast on Monday, driving a surge in air conditioner use, further spiking electricity demand. Flynn said that despite improvements in air conditioner efficiency, “the overall impact on electricity usage remains substantial but necessary for health benefits.”

  1. how about maryland closing plants while at the same time building no new ones, what happens with their green agenda when the wind dont blow or the sun dont shine? wont matter though as the politicians in annapolis will still get their grift on from the monopoly called exelon! it should be illegal for a monopoly to hire lobbyist to pay off politicals? Same for comcast!!!
where you at Adams? Mautz? Carozza?
why hasnt this become a law?

  2. Safe nuclear power is the only answer. If Nicolai Tesla were still alive it might be different, but his genius was ignored and buried with him.

  3. There is no secret to nuclear power 10:42. Nuclear power has been providing our country with safe, clean, reliable electricity for well over 50 years. Not one person in the United States has died or been injured from a nuclear incident. When there is an automatic shutdown of a reactor the system is working correctly and proper by design. Also it was Dr Fermi who first developed nuclear fission to produce heat, not Tesla.
