Lane closures on Route 50 bridge likely for summer

The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) reports lane closures will continue on the Route 50 bridge through next summer.

While work on the signals and machinery room are now complete, SHA spokesperson Danny Allman said motorists can expect lane closures to continue on the Harry W. Kelley Memorial Bridge through June 2026 as the agency begins concrete work.

When reached for comment this week, Ocean City Public Works Director Hal Adkins called the move “illogical,” noting the impacts such closures would have on traffic as the city enters its summer season.

“We, public works, strive annually to complete all of our major roadway work prior to Memorial Day Weekend and SHA, historically speaking, did so themselves having recognized the severe inconvenience it poses to our traffic if lane closures are permitted to continue into the summer,” he said.

In January, SHA began an extensive project on the machinery room areas of the bridge’s draw span, necessitating roadway, sidewalk and marine channel closures throughout the duration of construction work.

And in March, the agency reported it had begun its replacement of traffic signals, which would allow bridge-opening operations to resume.

  1. Well well well….the response from City Fail – “…illogical..” Bwaahhahahaha. Where the hell u all been? Work for the lights, engineer box and gates took place and review of the concrete. What did u expect with continued rubber band and peanut butter patches. The bridge is OLD and needs replaced. So kick the can down the road and continue up to build on both sides of the bridge on the east entrance.

    – south side update the gas station, ADD townhouses and new gas pumps.

    – north side building a new home on stilts and give go ahead for the Angler to build up

What happened to the future larger flyover replacement bridge? When the Cambria came in, we knew the bridge was unlikely to move that way….then rehab the gas station and build townhomes and moving left is outta the question. Now, building a brand new home next to the south side and Angler building up…..very little room for higher new drawbridge. Then again, the town did approve all those new townhouse near the Delaware line. Right on coastal highway will little move ability between homes…garages that cannot handle 2 medium sized vehicles. Wait until all the rentals with extra large SUVs and additional cars show up and way WTF…then park in the Caine Wood neighborhood.

The important item u want is a dual lane route 90 and new bridges. 50 bridge crumbling, will have lanes closed until next summer and “illogical” is the response. Wake the hell up guys….newbies, you inherited this mess, now it’s yours.

  2. Just build a new bridge and stop wasting money on the old one. The sooner it gets started, the sooner it can open.
