White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Tuesday roasted Amazon for recently adding “tariff prices” next to products to smear the Trump administration.
Appearing alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Leavitt explained she had “just got off the phone” with President Trump in a discussion about Amazon, saying the move by the major corporation was “a hostile and political act.”
“Why didn’t Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in forty years? And, I would also note that it’s not a surprise as Reuters recently wrote, Amazon is partnered with a Chinese propaganda arm,” she said.
The press secretary went on to urge U.S. citizens to “buy American” to shore up the supply chain and boost domestic manufacturing.
Questioned about whether Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is “still a Trump supporter,” Leavitt stated she would not comment on the president’s relationship with the billionaire while again noting the act is “hostile.”
The Reuters article mentioned by Leavitt focused on Amazon bowing to the Chinese government in 2021 by removing customer ratings and reviews in China after users were providing negative feedback to a book by President Xi Jinping.
According to the article, a 2018 internal document instructed Amazon’s China branch to go along with the communist nation’s “ideological control and propaganda” as well as furthering its “economic and political agenda.”
