A Viewer Writes: he State Park in Wicomico County Project On what people Know and are Claiming they Don’t

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. — Wicomico County is the only Maryland county without a state park, but that’s about to change.

The state just got approval to pay $3.3 million to buy 445 acres containing the historic Long Hill property, to turn it into the “Wetipquin Creek State Park.”

The Long Hill plantation house dates to the mid-18th century. The property was owned by Donald Graham.

The Park Service plans to offer programs about “the region’s history, including the Long Hill plantation house, the lives of enslaved people at Long Hill, the history of indigenous peoples in the region, and 18th- and 19th-century farm life on the Eastern Shore,” according to a press release.

On February 12th, 2025 this project was approved in Annapolis by the Maryland Board of Public Works.

That day both the Executive and Eastern Shore Undercover Posted about the announcement. (Screenshot Attached)

In addition the Executive and the Governor both did an interview with the Salisbury Independent on the 12th, about the project.

“We are really excited, and one of our biggest pushes here with our administration is bringing people to our county,” said Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano during the Feb. 12 meeting. “And bringing people to Maryland. This is just one step in that direction.”

“This park land acquired through the grant consists of a mixture of forestry and title wetlands, agricultural fields and will all be managed by the Maryland Park Service to allow Marylanders to bird watch or fish or enjoy the recreational activities,” said Gov. Wes Moore during the Feb. 12 meeting. “I look forward to getting out there and hiking. I would love for Marylanders to join me while out there.”
Now in April due to apparent concerns by citizens in the area where the park is being proposed the Executive through the News Organization Bridging the Gap, told them the following.

“To clear up a misunderstanding about the “new” State Park in Wetipquin.. there are rumors that our County Executive was pushing for it..
Bridging the GAP reached out to Executive Giordano.. and this rumor is false. This was all state.. County knew nothing about it.
Rather or not it has been purchased already.. is now the question.”
