20+ Closed Store Fronts in the Centre of Salisbury Mall

August 25 2023 WMDT ran an article about the sale of the mall, and all the big changes coming.
https://www.wmdt.com/2023/08/big-changes-are-coming-to-the-centre-at-salisbury-mall/
A rainy day stroll thru the mall revealed that nearing 2 years later, changes seem to be at least 20+ closed store fronts.
How do you resuscitate a mall when there is nothing of interest to draw the public in.
The poverty rate in Salisbury is 24.8%, National average is 12.4%.
Why doesn’t anyone, including the mall – (who doesn’t want you taking and publishing  pictures of empty store fronts), want you to know the state of this community’s largest retail hub.
Do you realize what the long term impact on the community will be.
So you’ve settled with the very limited choices of walmart-sams, target, and kohls?
Where is the Chamber of Commerce, Greater Salisbury Committe, and your city-county government.
It’s been a tough couple of years, but a retail center can only maintain for so long, with 20+ empty storefronts and a community with a 25% poverty rate.

  1. Because the mall has turned ghetto nobody enjoys going there. Years ago we used to go to the old mall on Civic Ave to shop, hang out, enjoy the fountains, etc. Now the ghettoism has taken over and we don’t want to deal with it.

  2. Malls all across America are dying, Salisbury isn’t unique. Most people do their shopping online these days, it’s not that complicated. Why are you trying to blame the percentage of people below the poverty line for the mall closing? Oh wait, we all know why.

    1. Can you show me where impoverished people were blamed?
The reality is, that financial demographics are taken into consideration when retail looks into communities to expand to and having a high poverty rate isn’t helping, hence the dozen dollar store community you’ve turned into.
What an ignorant low intelligence person you are.

  3. What’s a mall?

The reality is the mall concept is far past its prime. The anchor stores are usually given a sweetheart deal for a length of time, and when that time is up, they are gone. Then, in come the wanna be stores, and they can’t afford the rent. The overhead is so high they can’t make a profit.

No point to a mall when you can get what ever you want delivered to your door.

    1. What are we doing to save Salisbury? We have twice the national average of poverty rate. Are going to be an apartment community? Peopke are leaving MD and Salisbury. These are working, taxpaying families folks. I wish someone who has ideas to salvage the community would step forward and form a sanctioned commisoon to take steps to turn this crises around

  4. There is an abundance of stupid people here.

There is already a dead zone at the old mall, 2+ decades now?

And a possible future dead zone across from the “”welcome to salisbury sign” when this mall fails.

And some idiot can’t connect the dots on why high poverty is a problem, and why governments, organizations and committees have done nothing to bring industries- businesses with better paying jobs here.

  5. It’s sad to see the malls closing. I still enjoy the mall especially at Christmas. The stores were decorated so beautifully. I enjoy shopping online but I really like seeing, touching and know the items I’m buying are not damaged. But now you worry about packages that are left on the porch of being stolen. I guess because I enjoy people, watching them and just amazed at the energy at the mall. I sure hope the mall will remain open and more stores will be opening up. That’s just my opinion. Much peace and love to everyone. Maybe see you at the mall?

  6. seriously? how much crap do you need? are you buying out of necessity or wants and desires? How much more chinese junk must you absolutely have? The problem with salisbury is the leadership from the good ol boys to the slum lords to the corrupt government along with the alphabet people pushing their agendas, and lets not forget the failed schools! All run by people feathering their own nests at the expense of the grater good! Acme is about to go tits up then what will have for grocery choices? glorified 7-11’s called food lion and wallyworld. look in the mirror if you want to know why things are the way they are! keep voting in losers and expecting change for the better! insanity!

    1. When the expected income range of our new “residents” is working at a chicken plant or cashier at a dollar store this is the result. Salisbury has truly become a ghetto.

    2. lol, look in the mirror?

Are you talking to the 3,000 out of 33,000 that voted in the last city election?

Or the 30,000 out of 106,000 in the last county election?

And did you look at the choices we had?!

      Come up with better candidates.
You have a certain low level landlord as your county council president and a HUD pusher as your city council president.

Are there any intelligent business owners out there to nominate?!

  7. you get the leaders you deserve, and since most of salisbury and wicomico are filled with individuals only looking out for themselves, well then………

  8. There are over 2100, non-official pictures of people in the mall, that people took of themselves, friends and family in the mall, etc, on google.

So why did they threaten you, if you published 21 photos of empty storefronts? They don’t have a leg to stand on because no one in those 2100 pictures on google, got their permission. They gonna hunt them all down?
