It’s time for time limits on public housing

Like other Cabinet agencies, the Department of Housing and Urban Development is moving quickly to undo long-standing progressive policies. New HUD Secretary Scott Turner has asserted that the agency is now “DEI-free.” Perhaps even more significantly, the agency is considering implementing time limits and work requirements for tenants of public and subsidized housing.

Although we should expect howls of protest from tenant “advocates” as cruel and draconian, such a change would actually benefit subsidized housing residents by encouraging upward mobility, and it would benefit those in need of housing by helping to clear long waiting lists for subsidized apartments.

To understand why, it’s important to know the details of HUD’s budget. In key ways, the agency is actually a vehicle for public assistance, which happens to take the form of a housing subsidy. The largest single line item in HUD’s budget is for “housing choice vouchers”—which allow tenants to pay just 30% of their income in rent.

  1. Absolutely needs a time limit. 25 years ago I was a certified HUD specialist here in Salisbury. People sitting home paying $25 per month and the government was paying the difference. They were driving around in nice cars with their hair and nails done on the regular. I know this because I would see them when they came in monthly to pay their $25.00. There are jobs to be had, and no one should be given lifetime rights to earn cash money and live for practically free.

  2. Open, no-privacy, military style squad-bay, with weekly inspections will get residents off their butts to get out!

  3. I understand that the new housing development being built on Snow Hill Rd. is going to be another low income housing development. Does anyone know if this is true and who is the contractor on this development?

  4. I remember years ago when I was struggling financially paying to take care of my family. Nothing pissed me off more then watching all those grifters buying nothing but the best with their food stamps then getting in their cadillacs and driving away! Hopefully there’s a special place in hell for all these evil bastards!
