Baltimore Red Line Light Rail Project Would Cost $7.2B

BALTIMORE – The Baltimore Red Line Light Rail and Bus project would cost at least $7.2 billion.

In June 2023, RT&S reported that Governor Wes Moore announced the re-vamp and re-launch of Baltimore’s Red Line project which was previously cut in 2015.

Now, the Baltimore Red Line light rail and bus project appears to be moving forward. The project, which includes a tunnel, reportedly began under the previous Baltimore Mayor, Martin O’Malley with an estimated cost of $2.9 billion. According to Fox45News in Baltimore, that number has risen to $4.3 billion with “a grand total of at least $7.2 billion.”

In 2015, the project was canceled. In 2020, the Central Maryland Regional Transit Plan identified this corridor as an early opportunity Regional Transit Corridor. The argument for the project is that it will connect those in nearby neighborhoods to public transportation, and the “average cost per person served is nearly $50,000.” In 2023, the Red Line project was relaunched.
