Elon Musk renews calls to defund NPR after controversial clip of CEO resurfaces

Elon Musk on Tuesday renewed calls to defund NPR after a controversial video of its CEO questioning the importance of truth resurfaced online.

Footage of NPR CEO Katherine Maher from an August 2021 Ted Talk reappeared Tuesday on X, sparking new debate over the taxpayer-funded broadcaster’s alleged bias, which has come under scrutiny in recent months.

In the 10-second clip, Maher questioned the role truth plays in the industry as the then-CEO of Wikimedia. She took over as CEO of NPR in March of this year.

“I think our reverence for the truth might have become a bit of a distraction that is preventing us from finding consensus and getting important things done,” Maher told the crowd.

  1. So katherine maher says the truth is a distraction to npr’s agenda. How could such a hollow person be appointed to a position of CEO of anything?

  2. Does NPR receive federal funds?
    NPR receives taxpayer dollars directly and indirectly, which means that taxpayer dollars are funding a radical, DEI-focused media outlet.Apr 19, 2024
    Is PBS funded by the government?
    Public broadcasting stations are funded by a combination of private donations from listeners and viewers, foundations and corporations. Funding for public television comes in roughly equal parts from government (at all levels) and the private sector.
    What is the difference between PBS and NPR?
    NPR produces its own programming (PBS, by contrast, does not create its own content, which is instead produced by select member stations and independent program distributors). NPR also receives some direct funding from private donors, foundations, and from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
    Is PBS news liberal?
    Based on their research, PBS News Hour is the most centrist news program on television and the closest to a truly objective stance.
    Who funds PBS and NPR?
    The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) receives a congressional appropriation each year of about $500M. CPB allocates the appropriation mostly to public television and radio stations, with some assigned to NPR and PBS to support national programming.
    That’s $500 million folks….. Half a BILLION DOLLARS !!!!!
    For fiscal year 2014, its appropriation was US$445.5 million, including $500,000 in interest earned. The distribution of these funds was as follows:[8]
    $222.78M for direct grants to local public television stations;
    $74.63M for television programming grants;
    $69.31M for direct grants to local public radio stations;
    $26.67M for PBS support;
    $22.84M for grants for radio programming and national program production and acquisition;
    $22.25M for CPB administrative costs;
    $7.00M for the Radio Program Fund.

  3. Wow, NPR biased! Who would have thought? The internet changed everything and I wonder what’s the relevance of legacy print, television and radio media? And what’s the value? I remember years ago when we got news form television and radio. Has nothing to do with the subject but makes me wonder what the Hell happened to local broadcast media, just take a look at the crap that the local TV stations call news. At least we have Talk Radio for the conservative and NPR for the Libs. Maybe that’s the value of NPR but don’t see the State funding Sean Hannity.
