Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano and Director of Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Steve Miller Announce Major Park Improvement Projects Funded by Cannabis Tax Revenue

Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano, in partnership with Director of Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Steve Miller, is excited to announce her initiative of several new park improvement projects that will be funded potentially through revenue generated by the Maryland Cannabis Tax. These projects aim to enhance local parks, improve safety, and ensure reinvestment in our communities across Wicomico County.
“Investing in our parks is an investment in the quality of life for our residents. We are thrilled to use this new funding source to make meaningful improvements in key recreational spaces, particularly in our communities, where we know these investments will make the most impact,” said County Executive Giordano.

The planned projects include the following:

Indian Village Playground Park Improvements
Indian Village Playground Park will receive several significant upgrades, including a new play module, renovated bathrooms, a small pavilion, and new walking trails. Additionally, the outdated softball fencing will be replaced, along with other park amenities that will create a safer, more enjoyable environment for families.

Billy Gene Jackson Park Improvements
Enhancements at Billy Gene Jackson Park will include the installation of new security lighting in the main parking lot, upgrades to the auxiliary parking lot, and improvements to the bleacher and seating areas. These upgrades are designed to enhance safety and accessibility for visitors, particularly during evening events.

Emerson Holloway Park Improvements
Emerson Holloway Park will undergo a comprehensive planning and design phase led by a professional firm. This project aims to reimagine the park’s layout to improve overall flow, parking availability, and ingress/egress at the facility, ensuring the park can meet future demands as a recreational space.

San Domingo Park Enhancements
The addition of solar-powered security lighting around the parking lot and pavilion area will improve safety and visibility at San Domingo Park, making it a more welcoming space for community gatherings and events.

Giordano added, “Our goal is to ensure that our parks are safe, well-maintained, and accessible to all residents, with a focus on equity in our investments. We understand that part of the revenue will be designated to new programming in specific areas, but we also wanted to see the improvements in our recreational spaces.”
