Worcester County school system ‘appalled’ at law enforcement’s manipulation of safety data

Law enforcement, Bertino respond

Worcester County Public Schools officials said misleading data was at the root of safety concerns shared by local law enforcement last week, and stressed that they were working on several of the recommendations made by the state’s attorney and sheriff’s office.

Three days after Worcester County State’s Attorney Kris Heiser and Sheriff Matt Crisafulli showed video depicting fighting in local schools and voiced safety concerns on Feb. 27, the school system responded with its own press conference. Superintendent Lou Taylor and Worcester County Board of Education President Todd Ferrante said law enforcement mischaracterized disciplinary referrals as crimes and ignored the fact that education officials were working to implement recommendations made by law enforcement.

“I was saddened and frankly appalled to see our elected law enforcement leaders choose to manipulate student referral data and attempt to say our schools were hotspots for assaults,” Taylor said. “Student disciplinary referrals are not crimes. To label referrals as assault rate is an affront to our schools, our students and our staff, particularly those staff who lent their expertise to putting this data together not knowing it would be manipulated in such a way.”

A joint statement issued by Heiser and Crisafulli after the press conference said the presentation by the school system did nothing to assure the public that educators were making safety a priority.

“Despite their best efforts to label the Sheriff and State’s Attorney as liars and data-manipulators, their press conference today confirmed the two main points that law enforcement has been making for months: (1) that crime in schools is rising at an unacceptable rate and (2) that none of law enforcement’s recommendations to improve school safety have been implemented by Worcester County Public Schools,” the statement reads. “Now that the Board of Education and Superintendent have publicly acknowledged these two facts, we once again call on them to take immediate action on these recommendations to improve safety in our schools. State’s Attorney Heiser and Sheriff Crisafulli remain ready to support, advise and assist school leadership in this mission, and will continue to provide transparency for the public moving forward.”

    1. I would listen to law enforcement above all. The system does not have the children’s best interest at heart. But you can bet Sherriff Crusifelli does.

  1. Well cops lie, and under law now they can lie legally! and with no ramifications. This is why data shows out of 10,000 cases where arrests were made, that 60% of them were falsified or has some lie on them made by the arresting officer. So what does that tell you. It is just like now how everyone gets blanket resisting charge even though cops and most people know it is bogus and will be tossed out, yet they still do it.

All the cops are trying to do is paint a picture that everyone is out to get them, and that is no true, and if it is, made it has something to do with how much of a POS they are, how unethical and immoral they are, how they mess with everyone, where they huddle up in a group of 5 to “find” or “figure out” something to charge someone with, even if it won’t hold in court. That is why the phrase you can’t beat the ride comes from. NO matter what or how wrong or how illegal an arrest is, cops still do it hence taking the ride.

Everyone wants to talk about not all cops are bad, then show me those cops, I don’t see a cop using his “discretion” to not lock someone up which can and most times ruins their life depending on the charge being levied. Or how a homeless person gets a ticket as if they can afford said ticket, because a cop doesn’t want to hear anything the homeless have to say, not thinking it is high taxes and fees that probably made him homeless in the first place. I don’t see cops offer to take someone home or give them money for food or their own shoes off of their feet. They show no compassion. But cops don’t want us to rush to calling them names and judging them on their actions when they escalate so they can beat on someone. They want us to feel sorry for them, when they get punched in the face by someone the illegally and unlawfully abused.

    1. During the first conference when they tried to say “nothing to see here folks” DURING THE CONFERENCE, there was a FIRST DEGREE ASSAULT happening IN THE SCHOOL. But hey, it’s all made up, right Jack?

  2. As usual. Sounds like the board of education is trying to cover up what is going on in the schools. That’s what democrats do

  3. Hey Jack…1:48PM. Look, it’s clearly obvious you’re either guilty of something or have gotten caught and possibly punished for something I’m sure is against the law. I have as well and faced the consequences. With that said there is no reason to talk negative about law enforcement. It’s evident by your rant you were lawfully corrected at some point, and again so was I because I disobeyed the law. At the same time that doesn’t make it right to bash law enforcement. From what you said it sounds like you feel as if law enforcements job is to kiss ass, “let things slide”, or consider looking the other way. Unfortunately that is the complete opposite of what law enforcement is. Given recent events we should feel lucky to have the remaining officers still willing to protect and serve. I can tell it’s hard for you, but look at some facts, like the abuse they take day in and day out trying to enforce the law to better the land. It’s sad they have to “defend” doing their job. Don’t get me wrong there are bad cops just like there are bad athletes, politicians, teachers, etc. etc. please get real. They are few and far between. I bet you went to have your picture taken with a george floyd satue…..
