CDC panel is investigating whether RSV vaccine made by Pfizer is causing rare paralysis condition Guillain-Barre syndrome

Health officials are probing a possible link between two new RSV vaccines and cases of a rare nervous system disorder in older adults.

The inquiry is based on fewer than two dozen cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome among more than 9.5million over-60s who got the vaccine.

But the numbers, although very low, are higher than expected and officials are gathering more information to determine whether the vaccines are causing the problem.

The data was presented at a meeting of an expert panel that provides vaccine policy advice to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The RSV vaccine may be linked to a small increase in the risk of a rare neurological disorder, health officials say (stock image)

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a rare condition in which the immune system starts to damage a person’s nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and paralysis.

Normally, two cases per million people are recorded of the condition.

But among those who got the Pfizer RSV vaccine, data showed four cases per million were recorded.
