Congressman Harris Recognizes National School Choice Week

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Andy Harris, M.D., released the following statement to recognize the importance of National School Choice week.

As a strong advocate for expanding school choice programs in Maryland, including the Broadening Options and Opportunities for Students Today (BOOST) Program, Congressman Harris continues to make education reform and school choice a top priority in the 118th Congress.

Congressman Harris’ support for school choice and parents’ rights can be seen in several bills he either cosponsored or voted for, including:

  1. H.R. 531the Educational Choice for Children Act
  2. H.R. 5the Parents Bill of Rights Act
  3. H.R. 4298the Keep our Kids Safe Act

In September 2023, Congressman Harris released an op-ed in the Washington Examiner highlighting many of the state’s public school failures and outlining the need for underprivileged children in Maryland to have more access to school choice.

Congressman Harris issued the following statement:

“As a father, grandfather, and former educator, I understand the importance of quality education. Sadly, for many children across Maryland, especially those in Baltimore City, the public school system has failed to prepare them to succeed. We cannot tolerate the status quo with failing schools. Parents across America and in Maryland should not be forced to send their children into the same public-school systems that are failing them year after year. If a child is struggling in a failing public school, parents deserve access to school choice so they can deliver the opportunity of a better education to their children. We must fund students not systems.”
