Washington, D.C. –Today, Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) a former faculty member at Johns Hopkins Medicine, and a Senior Member of the Appropriations Subcommittee that funds healthcare and research, called on Johns Hopkins medicine to immediately fire their Chief Diversity Officer, Dr. Sherita Hill Golden. Dr. Golden recently sent out a communication to staff last month that listed categories of individuals that she determined were “privileged.” In her “monthly diversity digest” letter sent to staff, Dr. Golden stated, “Privilege is characteristically invisible to people who have it. People in dominant groups often believe they have earned the privileges they enjoy or that everyone could have access to these privileges if only they worked to earn them.” She went on to provide a list including White people, Able-bodied people, Heterosexuals, Cisgender people, Males, and Christians as possessing “privilege.” Eerily reminiscent of claims made in the mid-20th century in Germany, this list included a religious group, among others.
Statement From Rep. Harris:
“This kind of woke discrimination has no place in modern healthcare and science,” Congressman Harris said. “In light of this diversity memo, patients who consider Johns Hopkins for their healthcare should think twice if they belong in one of the listed categories about whether or not they will receive appropriate care or be treated as second class individuals at Hopkins. This blatant discriminatory sentiment is contrary to all the principles held dear in America, and certainly not expected from an institution that receives hundreds of millions of dollars in funding from the federal government – including dollars to fund that office of Chief Diversity Officer. The only appropriate action on the part of Johns Hopkins Medicine is to fire that individual immediately.”
Andy Harris is right!! He always is! I have the utmost respect for this man.
