Cheektowaga woman facing more than 300 charges in animal cruelty case

The woman accused of keeping 140 animals in a squalid garage in Cheektowaga faces 308 misdemeanor charges, the SPCA Serving Erie County announced Thursday.

SPCA investigators, who have the authority to place such charges, did so against Kerisa Schmitt, who was scheduled to make her first court appearance Thursday morning in Cheektowaga Town Court but showed up more than an hour late.

Court officials postponed the appearance until Jan. 18.

Schmitt was issued an appearance ticket for animal cruelty last month after SPCA officers responded to a request for a welfare check on a dog at 42 Colton St.

When officers arrived, they discovered 140 animals in a garage no more than 20-by-20 feet in size, SPCA Chief Investigator Lindsey Wood told The Buffalo News.
