Worcester Law Enforcement Officials Highlight School Safety Concerns; Letter Alleges ‘Repeated, And At Times Intentional Violations Of Maryland State Law’ In Failing To Notify Police Of Crimes Inside Schools

BERLIN – Top law enforcement officials met with the Worcester County Board of Education in closed session this week after expressing school safety concerns.

Worcester County State’s Attorney Kris Heiser and Worcester County Sheriff Matt Crisafulli and Chief Deputy Nate Passwaters met with the school board in a special session Wednesday. The meeting was requested by Heiser and Crisafulli, who outlined serious concerns about the safety of local schools in a Sept. 21 letter to the school board.

“At this point in time, we are in possession of evidence proving that there have been and continue to be repeated, and at times intentional, violations of Maryland state law by school officials in failing to notify law enforcement of criminal misconduct and delinquent acts occurring within Worcester County Public Schools,” the letter reads. “We would like to provide the board and legal counsel this evidence privately and outside of the presence of school officials, in a special closed session.”

Todd Ferrante, president of the Worcester County Board of Education, acknowledged the Oct. 4 meeting in a statement Thursday.

“Upon receipt of the letter requesting to present to the Board of Education, a special meeting was scheduled at the earliest opportunity as the safety and security of our students and staff is the number one priority of both the Board and school system staff,” Ferrante said. “Yesterday, the Board heard concerns from Worcester County’s Sheriff and State’s Attorney, and at the direction of the Board, school system leadership is investigating those concerns. The Board will hold another special meeting next week to hear the findings of the school system’s investigation into these matters.”

  1. Hey Matt and Kris – you are doing EXACTLY what you are accusing school officials of doing. When they catch little thugs and thugettes violating the law, they try to coddle them, wag their fingers at them, and look the other way instead of busting down on them. If you, instead of politely suggesting school officials obey the law at some point farther down the road (maybe, please), locked a few of them up, the problem would be immediately resolved.

This, of course, would have serious ramifications, as we all know Annapolis has mandated that we must not punish these future felons and inmates. It would put teachers in a spot, having to choose between law enforcement and the teachers’ own unions and administrators. Hopefully, teachers will pick the correct side to listen to and follow, for the benefit of themselves, their students, and society in general.

  2. 4:38 – What in the world are you babbling on about? The DA and Sheriff met privately with the BOE to bring to their attention matters they had evidence on that the school system did not report. You went on some tangent about teachers, when in truth it would be administrators as they are the ones that have the authority on a school campus. Principals really don’t want any sort of negative press, and will go to great lengths to keep everything quiet that could be a problem. Additionally, the central office are the ones that issue Principals their mandates – these are the groups the DA and Sheriff are advising the BOE about. Try getting things straight before you go blasting away here.

  3. Our highly-educated superior say pay no attention to the slush fund either…pound sand Commissioners and law enforcement!
