Pyrrhic victory. Past shutdowns have been PR disasters for Republicans due to MSM reporting spin. The administration in power always maximizes inconveniencing citizens, while both those who continue working and those who don’t get full paychecks after government is funded again. It’s theatre. So getting a continuing resolution was beneficial.
McCarthy sowed the seeds for today’s debacle during his quest for the gavel when he granted the right to launch this vote anytime a representative was upset enough to file for it. Rep. Gaetz has some admirable qualities but maturity is lacking. At this point there is no plan for a successor and progress, however slow, on the agenda is now stalled until a new speaker is elected. Dumb move.
Spending bills by law are supposed to be voted on 1 at a time. However, over and over, we see Speakers wait until the last minute and push through massive omnibus spending packages due to the threat of a shutdown. McCarthy promised during his nomination process to return to the law. That didn’t happen. No reason for spending at OUR border to be tied to spending at Ukraines border.
