Scientists and wildlife experts say that if you find a fish that is surviving on land you need to put the animal into your freezer to die and here is why.
A new sighting of the northern snakehead fish – often referred to as ‘Frankenfish’ – has been reported in Missouri and in two other U.S. areas in 2023.
The Frankenfish has the ability to breathe air, making it able to live on land – for a period of time. The animal can survive above water for up to four days if it can stay moist.
Since the fish is native to Asia and considered ‘invasive’ in the U.S., experts say it should not be put back into the water and should be immediately killed.
Scientists suspect that the snakehead’s migration to isolated lakes and ponds may have to do with its ability to hotwire and drive pickup trucks.
And yet Maryland Natural Resources and US Fish & Wildlife is catching these things, tagging them, and releasing them so people can catch them again to get a small reward-here is an exert from the announcement last year:
“In an effort to monitor invasive northern snakeheads in the Chesapeake Bay and Blackwater River, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announces a new tagging program in conjunction with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).
Both agencies are placing yellow or blue tags on up to 500 northern snakeheads. Each tagged northern snakehead caught and harvested from now until 2024 could be rewarded with a gift card of $10 or $200 depending on the tag.
In order to qualify, the harvester must report the tag number to USFWS at 800-448-8322, and is asked to take a picture of their harvested and tagged northern snakehead. Only harvested northern snakeheads with reported tags will qualify for gift cards.
I’ve heard a snakehead will also eat your children.
Oh boy here we go again. You should be more worried about blue catfish than snakeheads at this point if your concern are native species.
A Snakehead fish can be killed without putting it in a freezer. A knife will do just fine.
Yea it will live on ice for a few days.
zombie fish good eating though
