Half of US companies preparing to cut jobs, survey shows

Majority of US companies implementing hiring freezes as economic outlook darkens

That’s according to a new survey published on Thursday by consultant PwC, which last month polled more than 700 U.S. executives and board members from various industries. About half of respondents said they are preparing to reduce headcount — or already have — while 52% have implemented hiring freezes.

On top of that, roughly 46% of companies are either dropping or reducing signing bonuses, which became commonplace over the past year as businesses tried to lure in new workers amid an increasingly tight labor market. Another 44% are rescinding offers entirely, the survey showed.

“Respondents are also taking proactive steps to streamline the workforce and establish the appropriate mix of worker skills for the future,” the survey said. “This comes as no surprise. After a frenzy of hiring and a tight labor market over the past few years, executives see the distinction between having people and having people with the right skills.”

  1. Industry is mostly overstaffed with a stagnant workforce mostly mid-management. Why do you think there’s a resurgence and interest in Unions?

  2. Roughly 60 days until halloween, 90 days from thxgiving, 120 days from xmas. Delta airlines have already cut 31,000 flights in November; businesses know they will be short staffed; lack of inventory and project folks wont buy during the holidays because the majority of families didnt buy in the summer or really take vacations. Their focus is 2023 and will make cuts just to survive.

Yet our administration says we are ok, keeping our focus on Jan 6 and Trump. Its backfiring not to mention #45 obtains FREE publicity every single day and twice on weekends.

We must hunker down now, make it thru the next 6 months (natural gas rates are sky high); gas prices are down only because demand is down! No one traveled.

We can do this but it will be tough. Shame the truth cant be told since it would cause a panic.

    1. You are correct. If people had any idea how bad it is about to get, there would be mass panic. We ants will survive but a lot of grasshoppers might not make it.
