Resort Struggling To Hire Bus, Tram Drivers

OCEAN CITY – With the summer season rapidly approaching, despite the continued dreary weather, the town is still struggling to fill out its transportation department workforce.

During Tuesday’s Ocean City Transportation Committee meeting, members got their typical briefing on bus driver and Boardwalk tram driver recruitment and retention efforts.

It’s no secret Ocean City, like most jurisdictions and the private sector, continues to struggle to fill out its staffing ranks for a variety of reasons. Finding qualified transportation department employees, including bus drivers and Boardwalk tram drivers and conductors has been particularly challenging because of the special skill sets needed, including, in most cases, commercial driver’s licenses (CDL), drug screenings and other training and qualifications.

Earlier this year, town officials implemented some incentives to attract new drivers and retain existing ones, such as signing bonuses, wage increases and loyalty bonuses, for example, and they have worked to some degree, but the full complement of drivers needed is still coming up short heading into the middle of May. Operations Manager George Peake provided an update to the committee on Tuesday.

“With the buses, we currently have 59 drivers plugged into the summer schedule,” he said. “I’m encouraged overall. We also have a full complement of supervisors and they can be called on to drive a shift here and there if need be.”

George Peake is the operations manager. LOL. When he was a driver and made supervisor on the grave yard shift he was nowhere to be found. I know that as a fact. So that should tell you something about the bus operation. Nothing being said about the favoritism and always missing money where the ridership tickets and the money collected was short 50% of the time.

  2. Nothing new here. Been a problem, continues to be a problem….who cares about buses….there is lack of HELP everywhere else. Until that is addressed, moving people on the drunk bus means nothing.

    1. There isn’t a lack of help everywhere.
That was a pile of bs created by the media to push an agenda
If there truly was a lack of help wages would be rising and they aren’t
Job I had 10 years ago is paying the same wage now, and they still have $hitty health insurance.

      1. Huh? OC is front and center. So the island is ready for this weekend as a dress rehearsal for the kickoff memorial day weekend?? Hahahahahah

We still have shortages via the Syscos and US Food services groups….prices are way way high for meat poultry and trucked in frozen seafood. Yes vacationers, most of our seafood is not local. Wages are higher which means more corners to cut AND there is a lack of hired help to run the show.

10 yrs 20 yrs 30 yrs hell 40 year ago doesnt matter. Hell we made it through several gas shortages……but food supplies and help. Here now and the future matters.

        Plenty of help my arse.

  3. Best drivers LEFT a LONG time ago to Never return !!! FACT All because of Dirty Supervisors Never Fired !!!

Is there a requirement to be fully vaccinated with the clot shots? For example, the company I work for has that requirement in place to have all the shots and is having a hell of a time finding someone. I’m talking about a job that pays 100k plus a year. There has been qualified folks interested in the job, but none want to get the clot shots.
