Workforce Housing Sites Explored In West OC

WEST OCEAN CITY– A Midwest company is exploring a variety of West Ocean City properties as it works to develop student housing to serve the resort.

While a presentation in front of the Worcester County Commissioners last week focused on a Route 707 property, Wisconsin-based Holtz Companies is looking at multiple sites as it works to bring seasonal housing to Ocean City. Holtz Companies President Dan Bullock said the first step in the process is determining if the state would support the project with a low interest loan.

“That’s the key piece,” Bullock said. “When we build, one of our primary objectives is to make sure we can keep the rents low.”

The Greater Ocean City Chamber of Commerce opened discussions with Holtz Companies last year, according to Executive Director Lachelle Scarlato, in an effort to address the resort’s lack of workforce housing. With 8 million annual visitors, Ocean City needs 12,000 to 15,000 employees each summer.

“That’s just to get the job done,” Scarlato said. “That’s not by any means to offer an exceptional experience.”

  1. Give me a low interest loan and I will build them myself. These companies want all these breaks from the government.

  2. Why are they acting like this is all new. This is the second time that company has come up. The site they originally choose was not feasible or fell thru.

A Wisconsin company will build it and reap all the rewards and the county / state has all the financial liability and the company wants to pay no taxes on top of it.

Your OC leaders do not come across as the brightest, or have a knack for looking to the future
The last building were dormitories with no complete or full walls separating the living spaces.

Even more transparent, they like to tax the chit out of the little guy while giving all the breaks to the rich.

There it absolutely is in a nutshell. There have been attempts to have a strategic plan, but everytime an outsider is brought in….something happens and they vanish. Then the responsibilty falls within to someone who has 30+ years of experience….Ocean City Md experience.

Year is 2022 and still the same challenges whether its the LEOs, firefighters, relying soley on J1s for help….AND housing.

Nov 2022 is around the corner….and we should surmise that Paddock will exit shortly.

  4. This seasons work force is mostly coming from Haiti, Jamaica and Africa. The Europeans want nothing to do with us.

  5. They will all turn into flop houses and it will be party time all the time. I can only imagine what all will be going on in those places.
