Forget New York, Some Maryland Municipalities Allow Illegals To Vote

The Maryland Constitution and Maryland law both require U.S. Citizenship for voting in state and federal elections. Several Maryland municipalities are subverting this requirement by allowing Non-Citizens voting eligibility in their municipal elections, which are not administered by the Maryland State Board of Elections.

Our understanding is that Non-Citizen voting is only provided in Maryland, Vermont, Chicago, San Francisco, and most recently New York City.

We understand the following municipalities in Maryland allow for Non-Citizens to vote in local elections:

·    Barnesville

·    parts of Chevy Chase

·    Glen Echo

·    Hyattsville

·    Martin’s Additions

·    Mountain Rainier

·    Riverdale Park

·    Somerset

·    Takoma Park

We have introduced HB1283 to ensure that all Maryland voters, in all elections, are U.S. Citizens. The bill simply makes the state voting requirement of Citizenship supreme in all elections.

Allowing Non-Citizens voting privileges undermines our naturalization process and the integrity of our voting process. One of the most fundamental principles of Citizenship is the right to vote, which is a cornerstone of our democracy. This legislation will help protect that principle.

We need your help in the form of testimony and public advocacy to shed light on this issue. Many are unaware that municipalities are implementing voting requirements that undermine our State Constitution, Article I Section 1, and our State Election Laws. Please sign up to testify, contact your elected officials, and be sure that your voice is heard.
