Wicomico Schools, School Status Update for Friday, Jan. 28

Good afternoon. This is Tracy Sahler, Public Information Officer for Wicomico County Public Schools. Due to inclement weather, 6 p.m. will be the time by which all after-school and evening activities must end Friday, so that staff can close buildings and everyone can safely get home by 7 p.m. when the snow is forecasted to begin. The Wicomico County Public School System will be closed for the weekend.

If severe weather conditions don’t occur as forecasted, we will of course re-evaluate and update our school families and staff.

At this time, we anticipate our essential Maintenance & Operations staff tackling the snow conditions around our school facilities beginning on Sunday morning. Transportation Services will evaluate road conditions around the county on Sunday. If at all possible, school families and staff will receive an update by SchoolMessenger call and email by Sunday evening about school status for Monday, January 31st.

While the first flakes have not yet fallen and no status decisions have been made about a potential weather closing day on Monday, we know that some are wondering whether Wicomico Schools could have a virtual instruction day in place of a weather closing day on days like this. While that may be possible in the near future, the Maryland State Department of Education only recently provided school systems with requirements for having a Virtual Inclement Weather Day Plan. These requirements must be met before a school system has the option of announcing a virtual instruction day. Detailed information about this process is on our website.

Please be safe this weekend. Thank you.
