House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s January 6 Commission was supposed to help Democrats save their House majority in the 2022 midterms, yet it failed to “gain legitimacy among the public, and has been plagued with serious legal and ethical problems,” observes The Federalist’s Mollie Hemingway. Pelosi’s committee picks have been “a disaster,” her decision to remove the ranking Republican and another top Republican a “fatal error.” She sought to run the commission “as a star chamber, and that’s precisely how it’s being run.” It’s being used to “persecute political opponents” and “violate due process.” It’s been “exposed for repeatedly fabricating evidence.” Pelosi herself even blocked the release of evidence implicating her office in mishandling security at the Capitol. The speaker is expected to step down after Democrats lose the House in November. “Her handling of her J6 Committee shows she has lost her leadership skills and lacks the confidence necessary to run such a political operation.”

Economist: Why Manchin Won’t Bend

At The New York Sun, Larry Kudlow cheers Sen. Joe Manchin for holding his ground against the Build Back Better monstrosity: “Not only has Joe Manchin been heroic, he has also been loyally representing the voters of West Virginia.” Polls show that “nearly two thirds of them believe the bill would lead to higher costs for gas and groceries,” while the senator’s “job approval has gone up seven points to 59%.” Meanwhile, President Biden’s own ratings keep sinking: “By the time we hit Valentine’s Day, Mr. Biden’s approval may be in the mid-twenties. About the same as the temperature outside. And Triple-B still won’t pass.”

Conservative: Blue America’s Ugly Message

“For the unvaccinated, you’re looking at a winter of severe illness and death for yourselves, your families and the hospitals you may soon overwhelm,” ran a White House pre-Christmas message, appalling the American Mind’s Michael Anton, who notes, “Blue rhetoric toward Red America — unquestionably the target of the above outburst — has been unrelentingly punitive since at least 2015, and increasingly so in recent months.” Yet this is the epitome of a losing political message, negativity “aimed at those whose votes you’re ostensibly trying to win.” It’s bizarre: “They’re trying to catch Red flies not with honey but with oceans of vinegar.”
