Wicomico Council Votes To Accept Grant For Pickleball Complex

SALISBURY – Plans for a pickleball complex in Salisbury will move forward following the county’s acceptance of a $700,000 state grant.

Following a lengthy public hearing Nov. 2, the Wicomico County Council voted 6-1, with Council President Larry Dodd opposed, to accept a $700,000 grant from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to build a new pickleball complex at Harmon Field, an aging ballpark in Salisbury.

While the property is currently home to a baseball field and basketball court, officials say the plan is to construct a new playground, an additional basketball court and a 12-court pickleball complex at the site.

“To only have a couple courts available now is kind of ridiculous for the demand that is out there …,” Councilman Josh Hastings said. “This makes a lot of sense for this location.”

As proposed, the county is planning to fund the construction of the complex using a $700,000 grant through the state’s Local Parks and Playgrounds Infrastructure Bill, which requires no local match. The Salisbury YMCA, located next to Harmon Field, has also offered to donate $300,000 toward the project.

  1. What a waste! Look at the million dollar skateboard park. Hardly ever used but we sure have one. Within two years after this is built the phase will pass. I think a new public firing range is needed. In today’s Democratic society citizens need to learn how to protect themselves properly. Jon E. Jrr.

  2. What a great plan. Now there will be two basketball courts occupied by f-bomb dropping thugs adjacent to pickleball courts occupied by pickleball aficionados consisting of retirees and the like. That should play out well.

  3. That money would go a long way in building some housing for the homeless. All those homeless people are not bums and have caused their own plight. Anyone can get down and out, you can and I can. Most people are only one paycheck away from being homeless. When you are in your cozy warm beds all winter, they are sleeping in doorways and cardboard boxes and just trying to barely survive. They need some help more than a few playing pickle ball.

  4. Anyone remember back in the mid to late 80s with hacky sack? Yeah exactly. Pickle ball and the amount of taxpayer money for courts?

    Cmon man.

  5. Hey Steve, Put your p courts over in the taxpayer funded million dollar parking lot that King Mackes purchased years ago on the old mall property. Wait until the B ball thugs rob and loot the rich ole p ball players.

  6. How about the city using FEMA COVID funds to repaint the rainbow crosswalks and buy new rainbow flags? Sounds like a misappropriation of federal funds to me…jail all these liberal crooks!

  7. I’m training for the Olympics and need a large grassy area to practice my sport
    My specialty is Javelin catching.
I have been practicing with lawn darts but they are not as sharp as a javelin
    Please help!

  8. My friends and I are into square dancing
How about building us some courts we can dossy doe on
We are all retired and on fixed incomes so the County has an obligation
    to help us.

  9. tickle butt seems like a great game. im sure it will go over well in the ghetto. maybe the sherriffs dept can pick up the trash at harmon field while they are arresting the thugs after they rob the picklers ,the trash never seems to get picked up there. the place is a dump

    1. I guess the city is to busy to pick up the trash there. Seems like trash has over run there and several of our once nice looking county parks.
