Animal rescue charities are in a race against time to get staff and pets out of Afghanistan

“I love these animals. I love these people. I’ve known all of them for a very long time. So it would be like leaving my family,” said one charity founder.

The founders of two animal rescue charities in Afghanistan are racing to secure the safety of dozens of staff members and hundreds of animals after the Taliban takeover of Kabul.

Charlotte Maxwell-Jones has been working for months to evacuate the many animals her charity, Kabul Small Animal Rescue, have saved in Afghanistan, but it’s the safety of her 40 workers that she’s most concerned about at the moment.

Though Taliban militants have asked her to leave without them, she’s waiting until her workers as well as the dogs and cats they rescue can come, too.

“I’m working on getting out with my staff, and so if it is all on one plane, I go with them,” she told NBC News via video call. “But I think I want to make sure that everybody’s on the flight first.”

  1. Not being harsh since i have pets too, but People are dying….Americans are dying in Afghanistan and this article talks about pets? Money, compassion, sweat and tears will be shed for animals in Afghanistan, when human beings must be priority. Without humans, animals STILL survive.

Headlines like PETA suing because they cant advertise on buses and animal charities worried about a country far away make me really wonder WTH.

America has so many challenges too.
