Bel Air Native Chase Kalisz wins first US medal of Tokyo Games

Chase Kalisz won the first American medal of the Tokyo Games, taking gold Sunday in the men’s 400-meter individual medley.

Jay Litherland made it a 1-2 finish for the powerhouse U.S. team, rallying on the freestyle leg to take the silver. Brendon Smith of Australia claimed the bronze.

Kalisz, a protege and former training partner of Olympic great Michael Phelps, touched first in 4 minutes, 9.42 seconds. It’s his first gold, after taking silver in the event in 2016 in Rio.

  1. What does Bel Air have to do with it? When people write these stories they make it look like Maryland in general, and Bel Air in particular, contributed to the accomplishment. The proper headline should be something like, “Despite Being From Bel Air He Wins A Medal Anyway.” or, “Sh**hole Maryland Tried But Couldn’t Keep Him Down.”

  2. Well damn if the 8:16am person isn’t positive. Geez! I’m glad the person from USA won the gold medal, Bel Air or no Bel Air.
