Activists call for Ocean City boycott over trash burning

Environmentalists are calling for a boycott of a Maryland beach town until it starts sending its waste to a local landfill instead of a majority-Black town in Pennsylvania.

Trash from Ocean City is being shipped to Chester, Pennsylvania, a majority Black town 130 miles to the north, The Baltimore Sun reported. Ocean City stopped recycling in 2010 and chose instead to burn trash to create energy.

But incinerators like the one in Chester, and those in Baltimore, are coming under criticism for the pollution it creates. Environmentalists say the trash-burning operation just adds to the environmental and socioeconomic woes besetting Chester, a majority-Black community.

Ocean City’s contract with the Chester incinerator, operated by waste management company Covanta, expires at the end of December, and environmental groups hope the town will not renew it.

“Why should 33,000 people bear the brunt of other communities’ comfort?” said Zulene Mayfield, founder of Chester Residents Concerned for Quality Living. “Right now, it’s comfortable for Ocean City to send it to Chester.”

A new contract with higher prices for Ocean City is likely to be signed in July, said Ocean City City Clerk Diana Chavis.

  1. Worcester tried to raise prices on OC back in the day. OC got twisted and started sending it to PA. If the activist win, OC will have to eat crow and start sending it to County again. OC does not recycle. Why? You tell me. They were supposed to recycle for special events. That went to shit in a hurry. Ocean City wants to do what Ocean City wants to do. They keep the public works operation simple, and as inexpensive as possible. And if OC says jump, the county commissioners say how high. The commissioners have a tiff with them every once in a while for show. They just redid the floor in the holding facility in OC. So County got some of the trash for awhile. So if you think whoever is making money from OC in PA is going to give that up for a few activist, and a black community, I got a bridge I’ll sell ya.

  2. So if they cancel the contract that business loses money and then they will complain OC is racist. This company had to have bid on this. It was not forced on them. I wonder what the town actually thinks about this. I couldn’t give two **its what the activist think.

  3. The black-majority town in Pennsylvania has the ball in its court. Its government can make those decisions, including enforcement of federal and PA pollution mandates. Putting the onus on OC is disingenuous and short-sighted. To throw race in the mix is reprehensible, but that’s when we know that they’re out of rational arguments. “Those poor black people can’t think for themselves without help from us Democrats.”

  4. If PA wants the trash that OC probably pays a lot of money to send it there. Why not send it? These race hustlers will find anything racist. Without their perceived racism around every corner and behind every door they would lose their power and money.

  5. Lots of land inland here on Delmarva. Outdoor burning already exists. Why not an incinerator in MD between Salisbury and the shore? MD, DEL or in VA? Again, why not. Need to think LongTerm. Spend some of that faux wind mill money LARRY.
