While the 30th Cruisin Ocean City spring event last weekend brought huge crowds, there was nothing too remarkable from a traffic and crime standpoint.
The resort was packed last weekend, largely because of the spring classic car event, which drew over 3,000 registered participants along with countless other vehicle enthusiasts and spectators, but also because of picture-perfect weather with plenty of sunshine and daily temperatures in the 90s. The town’s special event zone, with enhanced penalties for speeding, reckless driving and exhibition driving, for example, was in place from last Tuesday through Sunday and there was a significant number of citations issued and arrests made, although its difficult to discern which were related to the event and which were among the public in general.
Unlike the unsanctioned pop-up car rally in the fall, Cruisin event promoters generally police themselves with inspections of participating vehicles and little tolerance for disrespectful behavior.
Who would’ve thought when cops decide to turn a blind eye to a bunch of middle aged men and boomers trashing the streets, there’s “no incidents.” Crime can’t go up if you decide to look the other way and not arrest anybody. Meanwhile, when bunch of 20 somethings do the same stuff, OCPD wants to call in the National Guard.
As a resident I can say with certainty that this event, while it has a few “hangers on” and a couple of boneheads, it is not the issue with that mess in the fall. Still, I saw more than a few ‘tuners’ (the H2OI types) and when I did see them, they were almost all being towed. I sure hope OC has some sort of realastic solution for the fall. I’m sick of all the b.s. those punks bring to town.
It was indeed a very good weekend for we geezers! We do have fantasies of slammin the pedal of yesteryear, but just driving the strip, showin the car and talkin to others about their cars – always good times.
Then parking the car back in the garage, getting a taxi to the bar is the safest way to travel during the season!
I don’t go out during that other weekend. Just stay on the bayside and listen to that zip zip zip noise. HAHAHAHAHAHA
You are mistaken in the worst way 12:15. The group that comes in the fall are seeking to create chaos and intentionally looking for trouble. While every group has a few that create trouble, the H2OI group has earned a reputation it deserves – misfits and troublemakers. The MD State House and Senate have taken additional action, and the misfits that come this year in September will have to contend with actions from before the Bay Bridge and will likely be impounded before they make it anywhere near Cambridge, much less the beach. The “Geezers and Boomers” along with the rest of us will enjoy the sights of the at crowd in lockup.
