Hogan applauds increase of H-2B visas, calls them ‘critical’ to Maryland seafood industry

On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security announced an increase of 22,000 visas for the “H-2B Temporary Non-Agricultural Worker program.”

Governor Larry Hogan tweeted that he’s pleased with the decision, as the visas are “critical to keeping our Maryland seafood processors open for business.”

Three years ago, in May 2018, 7News and other outlets reported that nearly 50% of crab houses in Maryland were struggling to find people to pick crab meat after the workers who usually do that labor failed to get visas. That was because the Trump administration had elected to award the visas in a lottery, instead of the usual first-come, first-served basis.

Federal labor officials said that year that there was an unprecedented demand for H-2B visas in January. About 81,000 applications were submitted when only 33,000 were available for work from April through September.

Now, under the Immigration and Nationality Act, Congress has set the H-2B visa cap at 66,000 per fiscal year.

  1. This is just Hogans excuse to push for more immigrants he is just Biden’s lip service. If Biden was walking and Hogan was behind him and Biden suddenly stopped Hogan would be a backside appendage.

  2. The government has made it to easy the our citizens to stay home. Why work when they get everything for free including money.
