A New Hampshire high school track coach was fired from his coaching job because he refused to force his students to wear face masks while running outdoors.
The now-unemployed coach, Brad Keyes, says he does not regret his choices. In a statement to WBZ-TV, Keyes said that “masks restrict breathing, there’s no question about it. Especially when it comes to running to running full speed. The wind is in your face, it’s shoving the mask back into your nose and your mouth…”
He further blistered the school in an email:
“I will not stand up in front of the kids and lie to them and tell them that these masks are doing anything worthwhile out in an open field with wind blowing and sun shining … I will not deceive them into thinking that these restrictions are somehow necessary or sensible. I regret putting you in this position. Fire me if you must.”
His students came to his defense and said the mask gets them very tired, especially as the weather rises to 80 degrees.
Overall, wearing masks while exercising is extremely uncomfortable, specifically with a cardiovascular activity like running. Some athletes complain that it inhibits and restricts their airflow and oxygen intake.
These people running things have gone off the rails. I’m telling U.
