DC’s Kennedy Center announces grand reopening plan

Mark you calendars! In another sign of a return to pre-pandemic normalcy, D.C.’s John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts announced plans for its 50th anniversary season, including a September 2021 grand reopening.

The Kennedy Center canceled the 2020 season last year, and began welcoming some people back for performances back in September 2020 as part of a D.C. pilot program.

The mid-September re-activation of the Kennedy Center campus will include an opening curated and hosted by Michael Tilson Thomas and will also include the unveiling of two immersive, interactive exhibits, and a new life-sized statue of John F. Kennedy on the grounds of the REACH, the Kennedy Center said in a release.

The new season will include four artist residencies (including residencies from The Roots and jazz artist Robert Glaspar), and numerous new works.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. disclosed that it has received $269.4 million in federal funding since 2016 – including $42 million in grants and last year’s $25 million coronavirus earmark that was mostly used for payroll.

Even during the 2020 pandemic, the Center grew their net assets by $3.3 million to $505 million. Since 2016, our auditors at OpenTheBooks.com found a $114.4 million increase in net assets – from $390.6 million.

During this five-year period, their president, Deborah Rutter, received pay and benefits amounting to $5.1 million. Peak earning years were 2018 and 2019 when she was paid $1.3 million annually. During the 2020 pandemic year, she cut her pay to $507,375, which is still more than the U.S. President makes at $400,000.

  1. They received so much money in the China virus bail outs any taxpayer should be able to get in there for free.

  2. Why don’t they fund the “Fracking States” employees that lost thousands of jobs. Put $ in small businesses that were demolished by rioters? How about we take care of our own instead of foolish dreams?
