Maryland’s sole Republican member of Congress will face a challenger in the 2022 election.
Democrat Heather Mizeur on Thursday launched her campaign to represent Maryland’s 1st District, citing the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 as part of her decision to run.
“The events of Jan. 6 have forever changed us. Witnessing a treasonous insurrection against the citadel of our democracy with the express encouragement of those bound by a constitutional oath to protect it, was an unforgivable betrayal. Andy Harris’ actions on that day alone disqualify him from to represent Maryland’s 1st District,” Mizeur said.
Mizeur referenced Harris’ efforts to contest the 2020 presidential election results. Harris was a leader in arguing on behalf of Trump’s unfounded claims of voter fraud.
Mizeur previously spent a decade working in Congress. In 2014, she unsuccessfully campaigned for the Democratic nomination to become Maryland’s first female governor and the first openly gay governor in the country.
